Happy Feature Friday! This week we have our railroad velocipede handcar for you. George Sheffield invented the velocipede handcar in 1878, which functioned with a person operating a pedal. It was used by railroad laborers, telegraph workers, and even bridge inspectors. Only capable of up to 15 miles per hour, one person was able to turn the railroad bicycle around and travel quite far by themselves. Sheffield’s first design caught the interest of railroad companies when he was riding it home one night and he noticed a damaged rail. He contacted railroad officials in time to prevent a train from derailing. Afterwards, the idea of using his invention to patrol tracks for damaged rails seemed attractive, and he was asked to create more for similar purposes.

Discover the spookier side of history at Bonanzaville! Unexplained activity reported by visitors, staff, and volunteers adds a mysterious element to this historic site. These guided tours go beyond the usual museum visit, exploring its reportedly haunted buildings. Experienced guides will lead small groups of six to eight people across the grounds. Participants will use specialized equipment such as EMF detectors, infrared thermometers, and spirit boxes to search for paranormal activity. You can also bring approved ghost-hunting tools to customize your experience. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, this evening promises to be memorable.

Happy Feature Friday, everyone ~This tap set, used to create or repair internal threads on nuts/bolts/screws, was made in 1863 by Nels Edward Mikkelson, a blacksmith by trade. Nels came to America from Norway in 1866 and settled near Christine, ND where he ran a successful blacksmith shop. To create this tap set, Nels used only chisels, files, and hammers. In order to create a guide for the threads, he wound horse hair around each piece and surrounded them in smoke. Once removed, the hairs left a visible guidelines for filing the grooves for the threads.
