Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941

In September, 1941, a New Haven Naval Reserve unit was assigned to the USS Solace, a newly commissioned hospital ship. They sailed from Brooklyn, NY on September 12th and arrived in Pearl Harbor on October 27th. On December 7th, the USS Solace was anchored at the end of Battleship Row when the Japanese attack began. Luckily the ship was not hit. They sent out launches to rescue survivors and evacuate the wounded from the burning ships. Over the course of 3 days, the medical staff treated approximately 700 wounded individuals. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Recently we hosted a group of seniors from Cheshire Academy. The students were reading the book, "The Things They Carried," and had wonderful discussions with our museum president, Bill Benson, and Vice President, Barry Josephs, both Vietnam veterans. The students and their teachers had a very meaningful visit!
