Butterflies have become a symbol of freedom in my work. Not just transformation, but the freedom that comes from letting go of what no longer fits who we are becoming.

Swipe through — which room would you choose?

Field of Efflorescence (72” x 60”) is made up of dozens of hand-fabricated butterfly forms which emerge from a dark, lacquered ground, each one a discrete sculptural object turned into a shared image of becoming.

The work operates in the tension between order and chaos: no two butterflies are identical, yet together they cohere into something that reads as a living atmosphere.

In this conversation around Violet Temptation, curator Edward Goldman reflects on how the work continues to draw him in the longer he looks at it. Thick impasto layers, sculptural texture, and flowing violets create a contemporary floral painting that feels alive and constantly unfolding.

Created by Haleh Mashian, Violet Temptation reimagines the rose through texture, movement, and transformation.
