The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is pleased to present Rainbows, Sponges, Flies, and Spoons, an exhibition by the Danish artist collective SUPERFLEX. The exhibition brings together a focused presentation of works spanning more than three decades of the collective’s practice at the MAK Center at the Schindler House.

Designed by Austrian-American architect R.M. Schindler in 1922 as an experiment in communal living, the Schindler House was designed to accommodate collective daily life as well as personalized areas for individual activity. Playing off this history, Rainbows, Sponges, Flies, and Spoons presents four bodies of work, each occupying its own space, completely separate yet strangely connected.

Through subtle manipulations of familiar objects and images, the works produce moments of humor and estrangement while exploring questions of infrastructure, ecological interdependence, and collective perception.

Don't miss the final days of "Nancy Holt: Light and Shadow Poetics," closing this weekend.

“Nancy Holt: Light and Shadow Poetics” offers an encounter where art and architecture shape perception together. Over five decades, Nancy Holt explored how we perceive the world, and how language, light, sound, and the built environment shape our sense of place. Bringing Holt’s work into dialogue with the Schindler House, the exhibition invites visitors to experience art and architecture as partners in seeing.

The Austrian Consulate General, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, and Villa Aurora are pleased to present a book talk with Monika Czernin, highly acclaimed author of “The Emperor Incognito: Joseph II’s Journey Through Enlightenment,” in conversation with Claudia Gordon, director of the Villa Aurora.

Join us at the MAK Center at the Schindler House on Wednesday, June 3 at 6:00 PM for a discussion of "The Emperor Incognito," the story of an extraordinary man in an age of upheaval: a ruler who spent a quarter of his twenty-five-year reign not on his throne, but on the road. At the heart of the discussion is the subject’s contemporary relevance, as Czernin notes: “Today, we are once again living in a time of crises. Societies are drifting apart and good governance is at stake.”

Visit Raphael Soriano’s Polito House (1940) on Saturday, May 9, during the MAK Center Architecture Tour Spring 2026 fundraiser.

Architect Raphael Soriano, best known for his contributions to the Case Study House program and steel frame construction, worked in Los Angeles from 1936 to 1953, where he interned briefly for both R.M. Schindler and Richard Neutra before founding his own practice. Built using a redwood frame and steel window and door frames, the house marks Soriano’s early use of steel, a material he would further explore in the 1950s and 1960s.

Tickets are available through Thursday, May 7 at 9:00 PM.

Join us on Saturday, May 9 and discover R.M. Schindler’s Tucker House (1950) as part of the MAK Center’s Architecture Tour fundraiser.

The Tucker House combines Schindler’s early vocabulary of plaster-skin construction with themes from his later work. On the main floor, varied ceiling heights express the different functions for each space within a complex spatial sequence, as the entry opens into a dynamic interior organized by shifting levels and light. A lowered ceiling plane articulates a 15-degree shift in the house’s plan, cutting a dramatic line through the space. This feature points toward material and spatial strategies Schindler would continue to develop in his later works.

Join us on Saturday, May 9 and explore R.M. Schindler’s Van Dekker House (1940) during the MAK Center Architecture Tour Spring 2026 fundraiser.

R.M. Schindler described the Van Dekker House as “a country house with dramatic accents, in view of the owner’s profession and social life.” Commissioned by Albert Van Dekker, an actor and progressive state assemblyman, and his wife Esther for their large family, the project became Schindler’s largest single-family project at 3,756 square feet. The L-shaped house wraps around a central patio and rises three stories, with asymmetrical gabled roofs and irregular windows shaping a dramatic interior.

Step inside R.M. Schindler’s Wolff House (1938) on Saturday, May 9, as part of the MAK Center’s Architecture Tour fundraiser.

R.M. Schindler’s signature plaster-skin construction, a hallmark of his 1930s work, finds a vivid expression in the Wolff House. The plaster surface glows with pinks and oranges, reminiscent of the warm hues found in adobe architecture. Inside, these hues continue in quiet dialogue with the lush landscape framed by the expansive windows. Clerestory windows in the bedrooms, situated above the built-in bedframes, reveal the moon’s journey across the night sky.

Join us on Saturday, May 9 and explore Lloyd Wright’s Studio (1927) during the MAK Center Architecture Tour Spring 2026 fundraiser.

Lloyd Wright built his residence and studio as he developed his independent architectural practice, following early work in the offices of Irving Gill, the landscape firm Olmstead & Olmstead, and his father, Frank Lloyd Wright. The design incorporates concrete blocks featuring a motif of stylized Joshua trees, that allow light to filter through, and mediate between interior and exterior space.
