The Norton Museum of Art is internationally known for its distinguished permanent collection featuring American Art, Chinese Art, Contemporary Art, European Art and Photography. Its masterpieces of 19th century and 20th century painting and sculpture include works by Brancusi, Gauguin, Matisse, Miró, Monet, Picasso, Davis, Hassam, Hopper, Manship, O'Keeffe, Pollock and Sheeler. The Norton presents special exhibitions, lectures, tours and programs for adults and children throughout the year.

Happy birthday, Buddha! 🎂 🎉

This jade bowl is carved in relief with seven images of the Buddha, accompanied by engraved verses conveying the essential teachings of Buddhism. This religion was founded by Prince Siddhartha Gautama (563 – 483 BCE), who later attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. In East Asia, his birth is traditionally celebrated on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, which falls on May 24 in 2026.

We’ll be celebrating the occasion this week at Art After Dark! Join us Friday from 5 to 10 pm for activities like Bathing Buddha, a ritual of pouring fragrant water over the image of Prince Siddhartha for inner purification, special films about the history of Buddhism, a walking meditation, an art and tea meditation with practitioners from the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple, and more.
