FARM HISTORY FOCUS OF JUNE MEETING
The June meeting of the West Rutland Historical Society will be held on Tuesday, June 10 at 5:30. We will meet in Whipple Hollow, at the corner of the Whipple Hollow Road and Bristol Road. Our speaker will be Allen Mills, whose family farmed in the area for many years. He will lead a walking tour of the area, if the weather cooperates. If there is just slight rain or wetness, we will go to the Pavilion on the Mills property which has a covered seating area. Hoping for good weather and sun, but just in case, dress appropriately with walking boots, and bring a rain jacket just in case.
See you on Tuesday evening for a discussion of early farming in the northwest region of West Rutland.

REMINISCENCES WANTED!
Were you a child/teen in West Rutland during the years 1948 to 1974? If so, raise your right hand. Do you think those were magical years for a child to grow up in Vermont and America? If so, raise your left hand.
Now if you have both hands in the air, the West Rutland Historical Society would like your input into our latest project. We believe that in fact we grew up in the very best time in America. Among ourselves, we verbally share stories about being a child, or things we did as teens. BUT, our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will never know the sometimes strange, sometimes funny, and definitely ancient things that were part of our lives in mid century America. So, we would like you to share some of your memories and hope if enough stories are submitted to us, we can publish another booklet.
Your story can be as long or short as you wish. But, we would like the first paragraph to set the stage for your memory. Where were you, who was with you, what were you doing, and why today does it seem so memorable. Details could include descriptions of items in home, school, etc. We are attaching a sample story to this post, but please, use your own creativity for your story.
What should you write about? Probably the first thing that pops into your head about an event during your youth. And you can submit as many stories as you like. We will be posting another announcement tomorrow with a list of some possible topics. If you wish to take credit for the story, let us know and sign your name at the bottom of the recollection. If you want to do it anonymously, let us know that as well. The time line for submissions will probably end in the fall, so you have some time to think about your escapades. Send your stories to [email protected]. We will update you on the progress each month. Thank you and remember, we are creating this source of information for posterity, who probably will look quizzically at us and not believe we are THAT OLD.

THE ONLY REVOLUTIONARY WAR BATTLE FOUGHT IN VERMONT

The West Rutland Rutland Historical Society will host local Revolutionary War reenactors Ed Maino and Mary Ann Stickney on Tuesday, June 11 at 6:00 PM in the Town Hall Conference Room. What started as a hobby for each of our guests is now a passion, and they travel all over the Northeast to demonstrate life and especially military engagements of the 18th century. Along with their introduction, they will show a video of the reenactment of the Battle of Hubbardton, July 7, 1777. West Rutland Town Hall, 35 Marble Street, is handicap accessible.

NOVEL SET IN WEST RUTLAND - AUTHOR TALK MAY 14
West Rutland Historical Society is honored to feature a local talent, Sophie Tanen at our May 14th meeting. Last year, Sophie published a book, FIFTY FEET DOWN, which is set in West Rutland. Sophie grew up in Rutland, but spent a considerable amount of time with her grand- parents, the Trepaniers, in our marble town while she was a child and her experiences are the background for this first novel.

The idea for the story, which she terms a sapphic soft mystery, resulted from her familiarity with West Rutland; its history, its streets and buildings and some of the tragic events that took place in the Vermont Marble Company quarries during the twentieth century. She remembers her walks down Marble Street and recalls the terror she felt as the quarries on the north end of the street beckoned. What would happen if you fell in, or even swam in the quarries and were caught on the ledges or worse, in the labyrinth of chambers below?

We are excited that Sophie, a graduate of Tulane University and currently a resident of San Francisco has agreed to be our speaker. The meeting starts at 6 pm; it will be held in the Conference room at the WR Town Hall. Handicap access available at the back entrance of the building. We are uncertain if Sophie will be bringing books to sell, as they are back ordered at the publishing house. They are available though in area book stores and on Amazon. We hope you are able to attend.
