What Happened on This Day?

May 29, 1884 – Carrying a load of sugar from Martinique to New Haven, CT, the Daylight became stuck at Georgica’s Inlet, present day Georgica’s Pond. Unfortunately, the Georgica life-saving crew was released from duties for the summer season when this occurred, but some locals had noticed the wreck and had begun to haul life-saving equipment to the beach. Luckily all crew and the captain were brought ashore however, the captain’s wife and daughter had remained on board. District Superintendent Huntting went to the ship to personally pick the two up for fears that they did not trust the breeches buoy; he succeeded in rescuing the daughter but the wife refused and eventually fell ill. Once a doctor was brought to the boat in the breeches buoy and insisted she return to shore she finally complied. After this entire ordeal and three tides she was successfully refloated.

What Happened on This Day?

May 6, 1894 – While under the command of a New York harbor master La Champagne ran aground off the coast of Brooklyn, becoming a tourist attraction for a while due to it being only 100 feet from the coast. As the ship was attempting to enter New York Harbor she became engulfed in a thick fog. As the pilot never heard the fog bell that should have rang out from Fort Lafayette he assumed that he was in the clear and could proceed as normal. However, he was in for a rude awakening when La Champagne ran aground near Fort Hamilton, becoming stranded. The bow of the wreck was covered in about 5 feet of mud and all the cargo remained. She was eventually refloated after a massive effort to remove the mud and cargo, free to roam the seas once more.

What Happened on This Day?

April 30, 1908 – The Peter Rickmers was chartered by Standard Oil to ferry 120,000 cases of kerosene and crude oil to Rangoon, Burma (modern day Myanmar, then still apart of the British Raj). As she rounded Long Island to enter the Atlantic a storm brought heavy seas, stranding her on a shoal off Zach’s Inlet. Surfmen from Zach’s Inlet, Short Beach, and Point Lookout Stations attempted to send out surfboats to rescue the crew and cargo to no avail. In an attempt to rescue what little they could, they began to offload cases of oil onto barges to send back to shore; much was saved but even more fell into the water and began to wash up on the beaches. After over a week of salvage attempts, all remaining crew were removed from the vessel with the exception of the captain and 40 wreckers. By May 19th a majority of the Peter Rickmers had fallen apart and what little was remaining burst into flames and completely fell apart.
