This year marks the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth. This holiday, celebrated annually on June 19th, honors the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved people of African descent in the United States. Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. It is observed by celebrating and exploring African American history and heritage.

Even though the Emancipation Proclamation declared all enslaved people in the United States legally free on January 1, 1863, Texas, which was still under Confederate rule, did not honor the proclamation immediately. It was not until after the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in April of 1865 that Union troops were able to enter Texas. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and his Union army arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, forcing the state to abide by the Emancipation Proclamation, finally making all enslaved people in America free. ❤️🖤💚 ✊🏾

One Bad Oyster is a band assembled to celebrate the good life. Based out of Fairfield County, CT, this group of horn section supported musicians rip through upbeat classic and original ska tunes.

On Saturday, May 16 our Colonial Encampment Day began with the dedication of the Liberty Tree in memory of Revolutionary War veteran, Isaac Godfrey.
Thank you to the Roger Sherman Branch #5 of the Sons of the American Revolution for donating the tree, which is a Princeton American Elm tree.

You can visit the liberty tree, which stands in the Betty Hill Garden, on our property.

Isaac Godfrey who was born, raised and died here in Weston. At the time of his birth on November 27, 1747, Weston was known as Norfield Parish and was still a part of Fairfield. Isaac was born to Eleazer and Rachel (Bennett) Godfrey. He was the eldest of six siblings, having four brothers and one sister. As a private, he began half day training in Fairfield in 1775 alongside his brothers Christopher, Moses and Elias. Isaac officially enlisted on February 1, 1776 under Captain Zalmon Reed of Redding and served for two months, followed by service in New York under the command of Lt. William Hawley. Private Godfrey then became a member of Captain Abel's Company within Colonel Bradley's Battalion from June 23 to December 25, 1776. In November 1776, most of the regiment, Isaac included, was sent to help defend Fort Washington, New York. At the fall of the fort on November 16, Private Godfrey, along with 238 Privates, was captured by the British and suffered in captivity. He eventually was released and returned home with a few of his neighbors, including Daniel Treadwell, Nathaniel Perry and Ned Jacklin.
Other accounts of his service detailed in his pension records have him as a volunteer in Captain Godfrey's company at the attach on Ridgefield in 1777. According to the record, he was “2 feet from General Wooster when he was shot”. Isaac continued to serve in the war effort. In Fall 1779, he was drafted into Captain Ebenezer Hill's company and served for two months. His final post was at Peekskill, New York in the Fall of 1781.
