From the Raymond Taylor Negatives Album: Miscellaneous shots of things in Weston. Sheep! Undated picture but, like most in this album, probably 1900-1930 or so. In 1840 Weston's population was a little over 1,000 but there were 1,596 cows, 3,110 sheep and 432 swine according to town records. Most everyone in Weston farmed or had animals and land for growing. By 1947, there were fifteen families farming as a way to make a living. In the 1970s there were three. Today - all but gone as a major enterprise. Raymond Taylor's Negatives Album: Last School Picture. Can't tell if this is earlier or later but Taylor made a point to print a blow up of the action in the upper left of the class photo. There's a story there...I'm sure. A very mixed group of ages...maybe the whole upper level school.

Raymond Taylor Negatives Album: More school pictures, just because. Here is the 1912 class. I'm starting to recognize some of these folks. Two different sittings. You can tell where on the Green they are posing.

From Raymond Taylor Negatives Album: More school pictures. Looks like 7-8th grade and we have a date (1910) with the shoe thing again! There are SMILES this time and two shots (one in front of Village School and other on the Green). I'm sure there are some descendants out there - a couple of the students seem familiar from other photos. Enjoy!

From Raymond Taylor Negatives Album: More school pictures and I would guess this one is perhaps High School. Secondary education was rare at the turn of the 19-20th century, with the few being sent off to academies and prep-schools. Our files indicate that Weston had a two-year high school curriculum operating out of the Village School from 1906 until 1923. After that, according to 'Waters of the Lonely Way' "Weston initiated the practice of sending secondary school students out of town."

From Raymond Taylor Negatives Album: More school pictures. Bare feet and some sour faces. School in Weston were often in the summers, according to what I've read, lasting 6-10 weeks. Eventually, a 3 month school year was adopted along with winter terms, and fall terms were added as well. Old Town Meeting records show quite a few "discussions" and "disagreements" over stoves for the schools, fuel, and even water buckets and dippers were debated at length. While there are few smiles, each face and expression tells a story.

From Raymond Taylor Negatives - another school photo - probably early 1900's as are the others we've shared. Quite a range of ages and dress. This probably the Village School - No. 3 - of the Weston schools. At some point, Weston had 12 School Districts listed, but there were usually something like 4-8 schools (each independent until 1885 when a superintendent of all was hired) with varying locations and student bodies depending of the year. A summer of early schools goes something like this, "...at first the town was divided into five school districts; in 1820 there were nine schools and 370 'scholars' between 4 and 18; in 1843 there were eleven districts; in 1880 there were again nine disticts, but with only 234 scholars. At the present [1895] there are seven schools maintained with 171 children of school age." not all of these had school buildings, with homes, barns and outbuildings serving as classrooms.

Thanks and Props to Peggy Hancock - posting on the community page - “Since yesterday [September 21st] was 88 years since the 1938 great hurricane, here is the Springfield Reporter’s account of Weston’s damage from their Sept 29 th edition.” Thought I’d share and maybe we could start a “This Day in Weston History” segment. Any volunteers?
