Did you know that the Handy House witch is 30 years old! She was created by Tina Raposa and her daughter. In her early years she flew outside Hay Rays. She took a break for a few years, and recently has been a regular visitor to the Handy House at Halloween. She is a bit shy (hard to photograph) but she has a beautiful hooked nose and a sturdy broom. She looks forward to greeting all young visitors on Sat Oct 24!

Two beautiful pieces of pottery by Kate Szal were recently donated to the collection. They represent the work of a Westport Point potter who became well known across the country. To support her family, Katy offered pottery classes in the “old” library where she installed a pottery wheel. Eventually, Katy established Suntree Pottery and worked out of the tiny former library, developing a remarkable reputation for her grey and blue pottery. One annual ritual was preparing for craft fairs. Rhinebeck, the well-known New York crafts fair was where she established a growing clientele that included the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Brookstone, the mail-order catalogue. She had an amazing way with people and would remember what return customers had bought the year before so that she could suggest something new for them. https://wpthistory.org/2025/01/kate-szal/

Local historian Richard Gifford, has focused his powers of deduction supported by an encyclopedic knowledge of this region’s history, to identify local African American and Native American individuals who served in the Revolutionary War. He has identified veterans not just by direct local residency, but by family connections (spouses, siblings, children) and ancestral ties to the Acoaxet tribal lands, capturing the fluid movement of marginalized communities across town lines of Westport, Dartmouth, Tiverton, and Little Compton.
