Thank you to everyone who joined us at MoCA\CT for ‘Jazz on a Summer’s Day’—an evening where film, music, and visual art came together in remarkable ways.

Bert Stern’s 1959 documentary, drawn from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, is more than a concert film. It’s a visual poem—capturing not only legendary performances by Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, and Mahalia Jackson, but also the surrounding world of coastal crowds and quiet, fleeting moments.

We’re grateful to Yale Professor Brian Kane for guiding us through the historical and cultural layers of this iconic film. “It’s as much about the audience as it is about the performers,” he said. A perspective that brings new meaning to Stern’s lens. Shot across what was said to be “100,000 feet of film,” the documentary preserves a cultural turning point—when jazz was shifting from popular entertainment toward a more self-conscious art form. “It's a good data point for understanding the ways in which the whole sense of what jazz is is changing in that moment,” he said.

We hope you can join us next week for a FREE screening of ‘Bessie’ on Thursday, June 4 at 6pm. Presented in conjunction with ‘Art, Jazz + the Blues,’ the HBO film offers a powerful portrait of the music, artistry, and era that inspired the works on view here through June 7. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience the film in the galleries alongside Eric von Schmidt’s ‘Blues Women,’ which features Smith’s likeness.

This special screening is presented in conjunction with Avon Theatre’s Avon on Tour. Opening remarks will be presented by Peter H. Gistelinck, Executive Director of Avon Theatre, and refreshments will be available for purchase. Seats are limited, so reserve your spot at https://avontheatre.org/movies/avon-on-tour-bessie/

Experience Bessie Smith’s powerful story on screen, right under the gaze of her monumental portrait hanging in our galleries.

As renovations continue at the nonprofit Avon Theatre Film Center in Stamford, MoCA\CT brings the magic of cinema to Westport through a special partnership with the Emmy Award-winning film “Bessie.” Starring Queen Latifah as the legendary Bessie Smith, Dee Rees’s brilliant 2015 film follows the "Empress of the Blues" from her early vaudeville days in the 1920s to her emergence as a foundational voice in American music. It is a powerful, honest look at her fierce independence and the complicated life she leads offstage.

This screening is your chance to experience the film in direct dialogue with our current exhibition, ‘Art, Jazz + the Blues’ (on view through June 7). A striking likeness of Bessie Smith anchors Eric von Schmidt’s monumental painting Blues Women (1996)—on loan from the Westport Public Art Collections (WestPAC)—making this a truly immersive look at the intersection of visual art and jazz history.

Space is limited. Secure your seats here:

Own the extraordinary.

Introducing Leviathan — a striking signed limited-edition lithograph by Rick Shaefer, created in celebration of the upcoming exhibition Looking for History: Rick Shaefer, Ellen Harvey, and Michael Borders, opening June 25 at MoCA CT.

Inspired by the grandeur and danger of the sublime, Leviathan captures the breathtaking instant a humpback whale erupts from the sea beside a solitary fisherman. Shaefer’s meticulous line work transforms every wave, shadow, and texture into a dramatic meditation on scale, beauty, and nature’s untamed force.

This 2021 signed edition lithograph is strictly limited to just 15 prints.

We are still beaming from a feel-good evening spent with Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play.

If you were in the room last night, you felt it. It was a warm, playful jam session that brought our entire community together. Between the world-class fusion of jazz, folk, Americana, and blues, the room was filled with storytelling and smiles.

Brubeck, acoustic guitarist Joel Brown (playing together for 35 years), and Grammy-winning harmonica virtuoso Peter “Madcat” Ruth have a bond that goes all the way back to 1968. And it was evident in the easy, affectionate banter between the bandmates.

A Wilton native, Brubeck easily moved throughout the night playing bass, trombone, piano, and vocals, shared stories of the band’s deep history, which anchored a setlist that included standards like ‘Polly’ and ‘Blue Rondo a la Turk’ to the blues classic ‘Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out.’ The band also showed off their songwriting chops with brilliant performances of original works like Memphis Hesitation and New Stew (Opus Two).

The music perfectly complemented ‘Art, Jazz + the Blues.’ Surrounded by the monumental works of Eric von Schmidt (a close friend of the Brubeck family), the connection between the art on the walls and the music in the air was pure magic. As our Executive Director, Robin Jaffee Frank observed, the music felt as though it was “in conversation” with the art on the gallery walls.

WestPAC co-curator Ive Covaci added, “This is exactly what we dreamed of when conceiving this exhibition. I think I could feel the musicians on the walls smiling and playing along.”

Spotting MoCA\CT friends like Westport artist Miggs Burroughs, and MoCA\CT Board member Ed Webb in the crowd made the night feel even more like home. Thank you to everyone who came out!

A special THANK YOU to Palmer's Catering in Darien for the delicious bites!

There’s still time to experience 'Art, Jazz + the Blues' before it closes on June 7. Plus film screenings of Jazz on a Summer’s Day (May 28 at 7pm) and ‘Bessie’ on June 4th (in collaboration with Avon Theatre) and Endea Owens + The Cookout on June 6.
