Artist Spotlight: Sofie Swann

Sofie Swann is an American artist, born and raised in Tehran, Iran. Displaced at a young age due to political upheaval, her abstract paintings reflect a chaotic yet structured world mirroring inner feelings of dislocation and disconnect in her journey to find a place called home.

Her sources of inspiration are memory and the subconscious, drawn from her childhood all the way to her adult life experiences living for many years in Boston, Massachusetts, then Paris, France before finally settling in Connecticut. Swann graduated from Smith College, holds a law degree, and studied art at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.

Spotlight: Shake the Pear Tree by artist Juniper Briggs 🍐

Juniper Briggs is a mixed media painter with a focus on abstract faces and figures. Presently based in Northern Virginia, Juniper grew up in a community of artists in the Mountains of North Carolina. It was there, surrounded by glass blowers, potters and painters, that she first learned to appreciate art. As a young adult, her international travels (particularly to Mexico and Spain) impacted her love of folk art and Cubism.

Pulling stylistically from both cubism and the classics, Juniper’s work offers a modern and decidedly feminine color palette and perspective. She is fascinated by the juxtaposition between the confidence we present to the world verses the wilderness of emotion we contain within.

“My work seeks to call attention to the beauty hidden within ordinary moments of pause,” Briggs says. “Whether that’s stopping to think something over, spending time with friends, enjoying the warm sunshine on your skin, or simply smelling the flowers. It’s these unassuming, often overlooked experiences that I am most drawn to exploring in my paintings.”

We have new paintings by Ken Elliott! 🧡

“My focus is the landscape and its rich store of ideas and inspiration,” Elliott says. “I am compelled to work from the trees, skies, lakes and streams in their endless variations. I don’t try to recreate nature or attempt storytelling. Instead, the works are simplifications and exaggerations of nature. There was a time when I felt the tyranny of the landscape. That is, I felt limited by making pictures of a place. Now, instead of making pictures, I am free to make paintings - art that comes from nature but is far more reliant on the strategies of making good art objects...”

Russell Miyaki is a contemporary artist and creative director in New York City. His studio is at Metro Art Studios in Bridgeport, CT, which is a renovated historic 1800s corset factory. A third-generation Japanese American born and raised in New Mexico, Russell attended school in Colorado, graduating with honors and majoring in advertising design and illustration. Throughout his career he has worked for design studios and advertising agencies, winning industry awards and recognition, from the One Show Interactive to multiple Webbys.

“As an artist, I use my canvas as a portal, bridging my inner feelings and thoughts to the reality of life outside,” Miyaki says. “Simultaneously, my canvas also serves as a mirror, reflecting my deep empathy for the lives and emotions of others. It’s this connection between self and society, the introspective and the universal, that gives my art its essential vitality and purpose
