2nd Battle of Summa begins! Feb 1, 1940:

Soviet forces launched an all-out assault on the Karelian Isthmus today.

The first part of this battle began in Dec, 1939. As the Soviets found it too difficult to breach the line at the Summa sector, they attacked 10 km to the east in a sector known as Lähde. The plan is if they broke through there then they could encircle the Finns holding the Summa position.

Two German submarines sank today. The first l, a U-15, sank in the North Sea at Hoofden after it was accidentally rammed by the German torpedo boat Iltis. The second, a U-55 was depth charged, shelled and sunk off the Shetland Islands by Allied convoy OA-80G.

First speech of the year! Jan 30, 1940:

Adolf Hi**er gave the first speech for the year 1940. His speech was at the Berlin Sportpalast on the seventh anniversary of the N***s taking power. This was his first formal address since narrowly avoiding the attempt on his life in November. The location of the speech was kept secret up until a few hours before it began. Hi**er claimed that Britain and France "wanted war" and he vowed that they would "get their fight."

French Prime Minister Édouard Daladier made a radio address to the people of France today. It was called "The N***s' Aim is Slavery".

He was heard saying, “For us, there is more to do than merely win the war," Daladier said. "We shall win it, but we must also win a victory far greater than that of arms. In this world of masters and slaves, which those madmen who rule at Berlin are seeking to forge, we must also save liberty and human dignity."
