At 100 years old, Mr. Marvin E. Gilmore Jr. remains an extraordinary example of courage, resilience, and vision. As a young man, he landed at Normandy, storming the beaches of Omaha and Utah with Battery A of the 458th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, making history as one of the first African American soldiers on the line during D-Day.

After the war, Mr. Gilmore devoted his life to breaking barriers and building community. He co-founded the first Black-owned bank in Massachusetts, created the legendary Western Front nightclub in Cambridge, and led the Community Development Corporation of Boston for decades while remaining a tireless advocate for equality and opportunity.

His service and leadership have been recognized with many honors, including being named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by France, that nation’s highest distinction.

At today’s gathering hosted by the Weymouth Historical Society, I had the honor of meeting this remarkable man. Alongside the medals and honors he has earned through a lifetime of service, he proudly took one of my campaign buttons and wished me the best of luck. That simple, genuine gesture is something I will always treasure.

Throughout this campaign, I have had the privilege of meeting so many amazing people. Meeting Mr. Gilmore was uniquely humbling and truly extraordinary. I am grateful for his example, his generosity, and his enduring reminder of what service to others really means.

He was shot on November 26th, 1783, at Ferry Point in Weymouth. He might have moved out of town, as no further information was found.
