It’s favorite comment of the daytime, and some fun photos from this past week

The comment, reads “incredibly interesting that this is here in this part of the world.” When visitors step in the door I often hear “yes, it really is a Museum, and yes, it really is about policing, and they really do have a lot of stuff from other countries”

So it’s been slow in my world today (but the visitors were beyond amazing). So I’m doing a little research. Everybody ...

So it’s been slow in my world today (but the visitors were beyond amazing). So I’m doing a little research. Everybody has their opinion about AI. On the one hand, mine is probably not printable on this forum, but on the other, sometimes it’s just fun to see what happens,

Here’s a patch - - and AI’s description. Now unless AI can go in and alter what I post, which I am just about ready to believe, I’m going to assume I don’t need to explain.

The best part of making an error is finding it before I post it.

We have some patches I thought would make a fun post. (OK, we have hundreds, but this is about three of them.). So now I have a fun little exhibit almost ready to post. You know… good photos, good info, good labels … OH WAIT. . .

Background:

I think I am correct that

Slavonia is a region in the eastern part of Croatia

Slovakia is about half of what used to Czechoslovakia (bit of a double entendre there)

Slovenia was once part of Yugoslavia

The labels I have - - very firmly affixed to my little display - - all start with “SL” and ends with “A” and use almost all the letters in all of those words, but not of them is correct.

I would love to blame this on one of our new volunteers, but they had nothing to do with it.

Time for Cheetos. Then I’ll start over tomorrow.

Oh yes, to make matters worse, the gentleman who gave us the patches had labeled them correctly. All I had to do was pay attention.

An unusual bit of fun yesterday. A “local” was looking through the photos in the Rockaway Beach section. Then he realized he is in the 1959 photo of the July 4 parade. He topped it off by okaying today’s photo with him and his uncle in the 1959 photo.

(Silver and blue - in case the photos are not in the right order)
In the 1960s and ’70s it was not unusual to see a Porsche police or gendarmerie vehicle with a flashing blue light on its roof. In 2017, Austrian police received a loan of a 911 (type 991) from Porsche. Complete with Polizei livery, blue flashing lights and radio, the car was put to use patrolling Austria’s motorways.

(White with black) Famous for its exotic car scene, Dubai needed a police car that had the high performance to match. Step forward the Porsche Taycan, the all-electric saloon that blends supercar performance with the practicality a police car needs. The Taycan is not Dubai’s first police car: the force has previously employed a 918 Spyder on public service duties.

(Green and white) Porsche police cars like this 911 (type 993), in the familiar green and white Polizei livery, were a common sight on Germany’s Autobahn for decades

The 993, the last of the air-cooled Porsche 911 sportscars, saw duty as a police car, most notably in Germany, where several were used by the Polizei during the 1990s. With high-speed performance and legendary reliability, it was well-suited for rapid-response patrols on the Autobahn. The one millionth Porsche ever produced was a 993. It rolled off the production line in 1999, and this particular example was put into service as a Porsche police car.

The National Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation reports 111 police officers killed in the line of duty for the Calendar year 2025. Of these, 37 were killed in motor vehicle related incidents, either responding to a call or struck by vehicles while directing traffic. While this is a reduction from 2024 numbers, it still leaves the families and the departments devastated. One of the goals, sat by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, is to reduce the number of fatalities to under 100.

National Police Week was created on October 1, 1961, when Congress authorized the president to designate May 15 to honor peace officers. President John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1, 1962. The proclamation read: “To authorize the President to proclaim May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week of each year during which such May 15 occurs as Police Week”.

The International Police Museum recognizes and honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who continue to serve in these turbulent times. 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of Police Officer Memorial Day, now known as Peace Officer Memorial Day, recognizing all first responders.
