We are excited to announce that the Wheeler Historical Museum is participating in the Panhandle Gives!

The Panhandle Gives is a 9-day charitable giving event hosted by the Amarillo Area Foundation (AAF). It kicks off the Monday before Thanksgiving and wraps up on Giving Tuesday - the global day of generosity. In 2025, the campaign runs November 24 – December 2. Your gift goes further because of the Amarillo Area Foundation Amplification Fund. The Amplification Fund is made up of money given from foundations, corporate sponsors, and individual donors and was established by AAF to AMPLIFY the amount of money participating organizations receive during the campaign. Funds are shared based on a percentage match of what each individual nonprofit raised during the campaign.

WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR WHEELER HERO SILVER STAR RECIPIENT FIRST LIEUTENANT JAMES P. PASSONS

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant James P. Passons, United States Marine Corp, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a platoon leader attached to the First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group on 17 June 1944. Although wounded himself in the cross fire from enemy troops defending the high ridge under attack, First Lieutenant Passons courageously refused evacuation and taking charge of an adjacent platoon whose leader had become a casualty, valiantly led the two groups in a determined assault which resulted in the capture of his company's objective. Immediately organizing his position he successfully directed his men in the repulsion of several enemy counter attacks throughout the remainder of the campaign until he was mortally wounded. First Lieutenant Passons' inspiring leadership and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service gallantly gave his life for his country.

Imagine being in Wheeler, Texas on April 14, 1935 watching this dust storm roll into town! Captain Alan L. Bean, fourth man to walk on the moon, was born in Wheeler County while his father, A. H. Bean was working on a soil survey of the Texas Panhandle to help determine a solution for these menacing storms.

Mr. A. H. Bean's trunk, surveying tools, and soil map are on display at the museum. Ironically, his tools are similar to what Captain Bean used to retrieve soil samples on the moon!
