Korean Cultural Center of Chicago

The mission of KCCoC is to promote and organize Korean cultural, educational, arts, and social events for the public.

The KCCoC is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that was established in 2005 by the Korean American community in the greater Chicago area. The Korean Cultural Center has a museum, an art gallery, a library, an event hall, a multi-purpose room, and many classrooms. Through diverse educational programs, sponsored events, and cultural activities at the new facility, KCCoC seeks to promote Korea's rich

5,000-year history as well as the uniquely vibrant Korean-American experience. It aims to establish a forum to celebrate and improve the understanding of Korean culture and heritage. Our efforts in creating the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago extends to all that are willing to participate and support us directly through Facebook. It is our belief that any cultural center needs the support of the public and we are eagerly asking any and all members of our Facebook Group to spread the word! This grass-roots style of participation will not go unnoticed to the powers at be (those that have the ultimate say in whether or not a Korean Cultural Center is a good idea) if we can grow our Facebook group membership. 시카고한인문화원 비스코 퍼포밍 아트 시리즈 세번째 공연은 바이올린, 첼로, 피아노, 퍼커션, 바리톤으로 구성된 실내악 앙상블 블루버드 프로젝트의 무대다. 각 분야에서 활발히 활동하는 연주자들이 전통과 현대, 동서양을 아우르는 다양한 레퍼토리를 선보인다.

Minhwa: Paintings of Hope and Wishes
Members of the Chicago Minhwa Studio will present an exhibition titled “Minhwa: Paintings of Hope and Wishes” at the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago Gallery from May 11 to June 3.

This exhibition showcases traditional Korean folk paintings (minhwa), which reflect the hopes and values of everyday life—such as good fortune, harmony, and health. Rooted in the wisdom of past generations, minhwa is characterized by its warm spirit, vibrant imagination, and free-spirited, creative aesthetics.

Through these works, we invite visitors to experience a sense of comfort and inspiration, while sharing in the timeless wishes for happiness and well-being expressed through Korean art.

“Minhwa (Korean folk paintings) in a New Medium: From BTS to K-Pop Demon Hunters”

The Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCoC) will host “Minhwa in a New Medium: From BTS to K-Pop Demon Hunters.” This captivating session will delve into the symbolic world of Minhwa (Korean folk paintings) from the Joseon Dynasty, exploring its profound meanings and its vibrant resurgence in modern global culture. From BTS music videos to K-Pop Demon Hunters and K-culture, discover how these traditional motifs continue to shape the aesthetic of today's Hallyu wave.

This lecture explores the historical significance of Korean folk painting (Minhwa) and how it is being reinterpreted in contemporary popular culture, including K-pop and global design. Once part of everyday life during the Joseon dynasty, Minhwa expressed wishes for prosperity, longevity, and good fortune. The program will highlight how traditional Korean art continues to evolve and inspire modern creative works.

The lecture will be presented by Hyonjeong Kim Han, Head of Asian Art at the Denver Art Museum, who has curated major exhibitions in Korean art and received the Sejong Cultural Award in 2023. This program is free with advance registration required.

‘민화 民畫, 경계를 넘다: BTS에서 케데헌까지’ 특별 강연

시카고한인문화원(www.kccoc.org)은 오는 5월 16일(토), 조선시대 서민의 삶과 염원을 담았던 민화(民畫)가 오늘날 전 세계적인 K-컬처 속에서 어떻게 새로운 생명력을 얻고 있는지 조명하는 특별 강연을 개최한다. 민화는 과거 사람들의 삶 속에서 번영, 장수, 행운을 기원하는 의미를 담고 있었으며, 오늘날에도 다양한 예술 분야에 영감을 주고 있다.

이는 올해 두번째로 기획된 문화원 특별 강연 시리즈로, "민화 民畫, 경계를 넘다: BTS에서 케데헌까지”를 주제로 2023년 세종문화상을 수상한 바 있는 김현정(Hyonjeong Kim Han) 덴버 미술관(Denver Art Museum)의 아시아 미술부 부장 겸 Joseph deHeer (조셉 드히어) 아시아 미술 큐레이터를 초청하여 진행한다.

‘조선의 지도’ 문화원 박물관 특별전

시카고한인문화원(이하 문화원)은 지난 3월 6일 ‘조선의 지도’ 박물관 특별전시를 개막한 데 이어, 오는 4월 19일 (일)에 이번 전시를 기획한 리차드 페그 (Richard A. Pegg) 박사를 초청하여 특별 강연 및 리셉션을 개최한다.

이번 전시는 맥클린 콜렉션 아시아 미술관 및 지도 도서관 (MacLean Collection Asian Art Museum and Map Library, 일리노이 Lake Forest 소재)이 소장하고 있는 조선시대 지도 12점을 문화원 박물관에서 선보이는 자리로, ‘대동여지도’를 비롯해 1800년대 서울 지도, 19세기 조선 전도, 조선 팔도 지도 등 다양한 지도 자료가 포함되어 있으며, 1395년 태조 시기에 제작된 천문도인 ‘천상열차분야지도’ 등 천문·우주관을 보여주는 유물도 함께 전시되고 있다.

문화원은 이번 특별 강연을 통해 전시된 지도들에 대한 이해를 깊게 하고, 그 안에 담긴 역사적 의미와 학문적 가치를 조명할 예정이다. 아울러 한국의 역사와 문화를 한인 이민 1세대를 넘어 차세대에게 알리는 계기가 되기를 기대하고 있다. 본 강연은 무료로 진행되며, 한인뿐 아니라 한국 문화와 역사에 관심 있는 비한인 및 차세대 누구나 참여할 수 있는 열린 행사이다.

KCCoC Museum special exhibition “Maps of Joseon Korea”
Korean Cultural Center of Chicago hosts special lecture and reception

The Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCoC) will host a special lecture and reception on April 19 (Sunday), featuring curator Richard A. Pegg, in conjunction with its ongoing exhibition “Maps of Joseon Korea”, which opened on March 6.

The exhibition presents 12 Joseon Dynasty maps on loan from the MacLean Collection Asian Art Museum and Map Library in Lake Forest, Illinois, curated by Dr. Pegg, Asian Art Director of the collection. The MacLean Collection is a private institution specializing in Asian art and cartographic materials, operating as both a private collection and a research-oriented exhibition space.

Highlights include the Daedongyeojido (Great Map of the East Land), 19th-century maps of Seoul, a late Joseon national map, and astronomical works such as the 1395 Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido, a celestial chart created during King Taejo’s reign. These rare materials offer a unique opportunity to view historical maps rarely accessible to the public.

Through the lecture, KCCoC aims to deepen public understanding of these works and highlight their historical and scholarly significance. The program also seeks to broaden awareness of Korean history and culture beyond the Korean American community.

The lecture and reception are free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through August 31 and is expected to enhance appreciation of Korea’s cartographic heritage in the U.S., extending its value beyond a private collection into a significant public and scholarly resource.
