MJFA is thrilled to highlight ‘Cameo’ by renowned color-field artist Helen Frankenthaler, newly sourced from a private collection.

Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) was an American abstract expressionist painter and pioneer of the Color Field movement in New York. In the late 1970s, she turned her attention to printmaking, transforming the centuries-old practice of woodcut printing with a painter’s sensibility. Her approach translated the fluidity and gesture of her painting into richly layered compositions that challenged the medium’s traditional associations with rigidity and graphic clarity.

A true icon, Frankenthaler’s vision forever changed the language of abstraction.

As we mark the end of Summer, MJFA invites you to explore DJ Leon’s photography, capturing the essence of the season, with sunlit beaches, joyful gatherings, and the fleeting moments that make up our Summer memories.

Leon’s photography captures the beaches and places he cherishes in coastal towns around the world. With a keen observational eye, Leon documents people in candid, often playful group interactions, set against the backdrop of expansive, sunlit beaches and scenic coastal environments. His color photographs, both observational and anthropological, reflect on contemporary life while celebrating the rituals of relaxation.

Since his debut, the Man of Steel has embodied the ideals of truth and justice, adapting with each generation while remaining instantly recognizable. The recent release of the new Superman movie reaffirms his enduring cultural power—a figure who continues to live vividly in our collective imagination.

As a youth in the 1950's, DJ Leon was inspired by Superman as an aspirational figure and hero. Superman, as played on TV by George Reeves, represented the possibility that every kid can be a superman in their own right.

As a child growing up in the 1950s, Leslie Lew was surrounded by the bright graphics of commercial ads and comic books. As an artist, Lew transformed Superman into a larger-than-life icon of American nostalgia through her signature sculpted oils.

From Westchester to Florida, this longtime client worked closely with MJFA to shape a collection that reflects her life and space.

This collector didn’t want art chosen by someone else. She came to MJFA to find what felt personal and true. She built a collection—featuring artists like Adam Handler—that reflects her taste, story, and space.
