JACK ANDERSON

“THE BEAVER POND C CONTROVERSY AT GETTYSBURG”

A couple of years ago a family of beavers dammed up Plum Run and created a pond at the foot of Little Round Top. The National Park Service is in a dilemma. Purists think it should be destroyed - “it wasn’t there at the time of the battle,” others say it’s natural evolution of the landscape and should remain. Dee and I stood on the edge of that pond last fall and pondered the question ourselves. What’s the right thing to do, and who decides?

This is inspired by Kevin Levin’s recent post on his Substack page: Civil War Memory.

Jack was the founder of (c. 1993) and for many years, President of the GMCWRT. Taught various courses in Civil War History, including stints at UVM and Norwich University. Member of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites, which evolved to the Civil War Preservation Trust, and is now the American Battlefield Trust for over thirty years. Is very grateful for the friendships made and proud of the many accomplishments of the GMCWRT. Retired as Windsor County Assistant Judge, 2021.

Our March 14 meeting speaker is Deborah Jurist. Her program is "Sleeping Sentinel"

This talk is basically a book report on Waldo Glover’s book, “Abraham Lincoln and the Sleeping Sentinel” which is an in depth and masterly study of the use of original sources to tell the story of William Scott, who was the Groton boy known as the Sleeping Sentinel because he fell asleep on guard duty.
He was sentenced to death by firing squad but at the last minute he was pardoned by Abraham Lincoln. His story became extremely popular and morphed into a myth about Lincoln’s compassion and redemption.

We have the usual 12 Noon Social Hour, 12:30 Buffet Lunch, 12:45 Business Meeting, and then at 1:00 the program followed by discussion and book raffle.

For lunch reservations please contact Gail Blake: 802-296-2919 - [email protected]

Hope to see you there!

Vermont author, historian, and publisher Michelle Arnosky Sherburne will introduce a Civil War treasure trove from Piermont, New Hampshire on January 10. Sherburne is working through a Piermont, four-generation family’s collection and discovered a gem in it. The grandfather of the late William Deal of Piermont was Dr. Charles Devendorf, a New York regiment surgeon. Devendorf’s letters, scrapbooks, journals, photographs, and even his medical equipment has been preserved. Sherburne will share about Devendorf’s Civil War career which included working his way up the medical staff ladder from medical cadet to surgeon of his regiment. Also, he spent three months as a Confederate prisoner-of-war after Florida’s largest battle as well as surviving typhoid fever the following year.

Devendorf’s military career was impressive and his life afterward even more so. Sherburne will be bringing displays of Devendorf’s memorabilia.

The Antietam Paintings of James B. Hope
Brad & Linda Gottfried

Paintings that illustrate all aspects of a battle are rare. An exception is the Antietam paintings of Captain James B. Hope, who served in the 2nd Vermont Infantry during the battle. Hope’s five panoramic (12 feet by 5.5 feet) paintings convey the drama of the battle and illustrate what it was like to be a soldier during this, the bloodiest one day battle in the Civil War. During this presentation, Dr. Brad Gottfried (who wrote a book on this topic with his wife, Linda), will display each painting and then zoom in on various sections to illustrate interesting aspects of the battle. This presentation will be of interest to all individuals who have even a passing interest in the Civil War.

Brad & Linda Gottfried
Brad Gottfried earned a Ph.D. in Zoology and served as a college educator for over 40 years, rising to the presidency of two colleges before he retired in 2017. He has written 23 books on the Civil War. He is also Gettysburg Licensed Town Guide and an Antietam Licensed Battlefield Guide.

Linda Gottfried earned a BFA and served as a graphic designer and development officer at several colleges and nonprofit organizations before retiring in 2015. She now spends her time as sculptor and enjoying retirement. Several of her pieces have won awards. The Gottfrieds have five children and seven grandchildren and they live in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania.

Our next meeting will be on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Bugbee Senior Center, White River Junction, VT. Our speaker will be Savannah Clark. 12 Noon will be our Social Hour. 12:30 Buffet Lunch, business meeting at 12:45 and then our program at 1:00 followed by discussion and book raffle.

Title of Program: "Letters from Home: Northern New England Women and the American Civil War."

Savannah’s talk will focus on the wartime experiences of women from the states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Northern New England women lived far from Civil War battlefields, but they were still deeply impacted by the conflict and the loss of their soldier relatives to the war effort. Using letters written by women, this talk will highlight the voices of women left behind on the Northern New England home front and explore how they dealt with the political, economic, and emotional trials of the Civil War.

Savannah Clark is a PhD candidate in history at the University of Maine. She received her M.A. from the University of Maine and her B.A. from Gettysburg College. Her research interests include the Civil War, women’s history, and nineteenth-century American history. In 2024, Savannah was awarded the New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grant to support her dissertation research and she is currently drafting her dissertation on women’s experiences during the Civil War. Her research has been published in the journal Home Front Studies. Savannah grew up in Maine and currently lives in Maine.
