Calling all artists! We're hosting a free opportunity for community members of all ages to exhibit water themed artwork. The exhibit - Water Wonderland – is inspired by the White Lake Area Chamber & Visitors Bureau revival of the Maritime Festival August 6-8.

As Michiganders we are surrounded by an abundance of fresh water in the beautiful and diverse great lakes, numerous rivers, creeks, inland lakes and ponds. All these bodies of water provide rich sources of inspiration whether it be environmentally, historically and /or personally to those of us who live and interact with these precious resources daily. What inspires you about water and how have you captured its essence? We hope that you will share your creativity in our community call for art

Artists of all ages can show off their original artwork with a water theme. We welcome art created from all kinds of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, 3D, as well as video and original music – www.artswhitelake.org/call-for-artists.

And there will be prizes! An ACWL-Nuveen award for $100 in the Adult Division - $50 in the Youth Division and Honorable Mention awards of art supplies in both categories.

All artwork needs to be dropped off during gallery hours between Friday, June 26 and Friday, July 3. The exhibit will be open to the public July 10 through August 22. A public reception will be held on Friday, August 7 from 4-6pm when awards will be announced. Any questions please reach out – 231-893-2524 or [email protected] or stop by our location at 106 E. Colby in downtown Whitehall.

🌺🌼🌷Summer Art: Botanical Bonanza class!

In this two-day class, students will use flowers, leaves and more to create two unique art projects:

1. Four greeting cards created by pounding flowers and leaves on watercolor paper. Known as Tatakizome, this is an eco-friendly and water-free way of transferring plant pigments directly onto paper.

2. A cotton bandana dyed using flowers and pigment powders. This technique, while still using flowers and leaves, transfers the pigment from the natural materials through steaming.

Students are welcome to bring their own found foliage, but we will have plenty available at the Nuveen for you to use.

About the Instructor: Sue Bromm is a Fiber Artist who uses techniques of botanical printing and hand embroidery to create pieces that honor Mother Earth. In exploring and foraging for printing materials, Sue meets many plants with beautiful leaves and flowers. These, she utilizes for dyeing and printing scarves, pillows, table runners, mounted prints and more. Sue is also cultivating herb and flower gardens. Creating this way gives her a sense of Place and grounds her work. Sue's hope is that her work enables people to learn to enjoy the “common” foliage around them.

Date: Wednesday, June 24 & Thursday, June 25
Ages: 8-12
Time: 1:00 - 2:30 PM
Cost: $10.80 members / $12 non-members

Printmaking: Woodcut & Watercolor class! We are excited to announce that we are offering another 2 day session with Lee Ann this June. Woodcut, one of the oldest forms of printmaking, brings particular possibilities and challenges. Using Shina wood, you will learn proper carving, registration, paper preparation and inking techniques. Color will be added to the black and white print with watercolor. All materials are provided. This class is appropriate for beginning and advanced students.

About the instructor: Lee Ann Frame is an artist many people in West Michigan are familiar with. A retired art instructor at Muskegon Community College, Lee Ann is recognized regionally and nationally for her exquisite printmaking which she has exhibited extensively. She also sells her prints at the Muskegon Museum of Art and and in our retail gallery at the ACWL-Nuveen. In 2024, Lee Ann started teaching two-day intensive printmaking classes at the ACWL-Nuveen, offering instruction in linocut and woodcut techniques. Her excellent teaching inspired a dedicated group of printmakers at the Arts Council who now meet on a regular basis to further their skills and use our printing press.

As with all ACWL-Nuveen classes, all materials will be provided for this course. The cost to participate is $170. If that fee is out of reach, we do have Pay-What-You-Can pricing available, thanks to the ACWL-Nuveen Scholarship Fund. Students who can't afford the $170 fee can sign up and pay $90 by entering the Woodcut90 coupon code when registering, as explained in the class description.
