I often photograph on a Flint Hills ranch near Cassoday. For the past three years, a pair of bald eagles has made their home on the ranch, where they have constructed a large nest in a sycamore tree growing beside a creek where it flows into a large watershed pond. I visited them on March 18. When I inspected this photograph back at my computer, I was pleased to see both last year's fruit and this year's blossoms (the fuzzy orange balls silhouetted against the nest). - John D Morrison

My "All October!"exhibition at Wichita's Gallery 12, 412 E Douglass, runs from October 3 through November 1. I’ve chosen thirty-one photos to exhibit, each taken on a different day in October. The opening reception is this Friday evening, October 3. If you're out in Wichita that evening, please stop by and see us. Be warned that paid parking on Douglas is agressively enforced, including Friday nights!

The photo below is the candidate I chose for day 27. It's from western Chase County and titled "Coyne Creek Ford, October." - John D Morrison

I am the featured member artist at Wichita’s Gallery 12 in October. In a bold stroke of originality, the exhibition’s theme is “October,” and it works like this – since my photography career was a late-in-life action, I have only twenty-three years of photo files to draw from, but from these I’ve chosen thirty-one photos to exhibit, each taken on a different day in October. There’s one each from Colorado, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, and the rest are of Kansas. Of these, six are from the Flint Hills, and the rest are scattered about the state. I hope you can join me at the opening reception on Friday evening, October 3. As a sample, here’s the chosen photo for October 15—a sunset on a Flint Hills ranch in 2022. - John D Morrison

By now, most people seeing this post will have heard of the passing of Josh Hoy and Jim Hoy this past weekend. If not, links to two accounts follow below.

I was blessed to watch the Hoys at work for the past twenty years as they lent a hand at the annual July roundup and shipping at the Shadow Valley Ranch. The photo, from July 23, 2024, catches Jim and Josh as they pause for the next cattle truck to back into place. - John D Morrison

For more than twenty years, the owners of a large Flint Hills ranch near Cassoday have let me photograph their annual July roundup. This year it occurs over five days, each day seeing about five hundred steers taken off the pasture and loaded onto trucks bound for Nebraska feed lots. As in most years, several area riders assist the ranch staff to gather each days shipment, then guide the animals through a scale to be weighed a dozen at a time. Finally the riders direct exact counts of steers onto the four partitioned areas of each cattle trailer. I've attached some photos of the riders helping on July 22 and 23. - John D Morrison
