For more than 20 years, Babak Tafreshi has photographed the relationship between our planet and the night sky through his project The World at Night.

This image from Yosemite National Park captures a full hour of Earth’s rotation around Polaris, illuminated only by moonlight rising over the valley floor.

A remarkable blend of patience, science, and artistic vision.

I came to Santorini for this image.

But as the sun neared horizon, I was at water level, looking up at the cliff where I should have been standing, several hundred feet above us.

My Dad was on this shoot with me. I looked at the sun. Looked at the *endless* stairs upward. Looked at him.

“You think we can do it?”

“Absolutely.”

We started climbing with bags full of gear, racing against the sun. I knew it would be worth it.

It usually is.
