I have been drawing and painting since I was little. Growing up in Wichita, I was privileged to study an exceptional collection of American art from the first half of the twentieth century, a collection that has grown beautifully over time. Strong among my influences in later art study at Wichita State University, I was strongly influenced by German Expressionism, Elaine de Kooning, and the rich traditions of Mexican art, both ancient and modern.
So finally I am as I am today, living in color, devoted to forms of the primitive and the organic.

🖼️ Art For Sale: “Checkers and Anime Heros” by Steve Murillo

Steve Murillo is a Wichita-based artist who operates both a studio and gallery in Old Town. His work is widely recognized through large-scale public art projects across the city, including the Standing Stones in Riverside Park, the Light Towers at Central, McLean, and Meridian, the mosaic at Abode Venue on East Douglas, a farm implement sculpture at 2nd and Washington, and the neon Shade Structures in Old Town Square. He is also known for expansive interior murals, with notable pieces at Larkspur Restaurant, the four-story mural at WaterWalk Residences, and a commissioned painting displayed in the Emprise Bank lobby.

Murillo spent 15 years teaching at Wichita State University, where he earned both his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. His background also includes serving as an Artist-in-Residence within multiple Kansas school districts through a National Endowment–supported program in partnership with local boards of education, as well as advanced study in Europe at the Michael Karolyi Foundation.
