The World Trade Center site has been through two redevelopment phases — first to construct the iconic Twin Towers, and then to create the urban village that replaced them following their destruction. In this talk, Muscarelle Director David Brashear will discuss the architects and the architectural and design innovations that have twice made the site one of the finest urban environments in the world.

This talk will take place in the Event Hall at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. Free and open to all. Registration is encouraged. Visit muscarelle.wm.edu/events to secure your spot!

💚Happy Homecoming💛

As William & Mary celebrates Homecoming, we invite all to visit the Muscarelle to see this masterpiece of 💚 Green & Gold 💛 now on view in 18th-20th Century American Paintings.

The artwork of Luigi Lucioni (1900-1988) was influenced by a series of trips he made to Europe in the 1920s, where he spent time in museums learning the paintings of the great masters. His attraction to the works of the titans of the Italian Renaissance became embedded in his own artistic approach. While many of his contemporaries were drawn to abstraction, Lucioni developed a style that was deeply realistic. His "Andante in Yellow and Green" is an outstanding reflection of the artist’s body of work, incorporating his signature yellow tone, his masterful rendering of draped fabrics, his realistic depiction of fruit and his nearly-trompe l’oeil presentation of weathered wood.

Adrián Fernández’s “Untitled No. 18” (2019) reflects the artist’s interest in photography as a means of documenting and interpreting cultural identity. Born in Havana, Cuba, Fernández draws on imagery, symbols and visual traditions to explore how societies represent their histories, ideologies and collective identities. His photographic practice considers how images can function as more than records of a moment, becoming symbols that preserve memory and communicate ideas across time and place.

There’s more to discover beyond the frame. Visit “Photography from 1870 to Tomorrow: Pioneers and Innovators” and see what catches your eye!

Master A:shiwi (Zuni) potter Catalina Zunie devoted herself to keeping the ceramic traditions of her people viable in the twentieth century. The construction of Zuni pottery is done with careful attention to rituals and prayers for each part of the ceramic process. Made to hold water, a precious element for the Zuni people, Zunie has decorated this pot with stylized rain clouds and water birds. In the skilled hands of Mother Zunie, clay and paint have become a physical manifestation of a Zuni prayer for rain.

Opening on March 5, 2027, “At One with the Earth: Kinship, Friendship and Traditions in Zuni Ceramics” explores the stylistic elements in Zuni pottery traditions. Curated by Danielle Moretti-Langholtz, the exhibition will have programming that includes visiting elders from Zuni to offer Native perspectives on the exhibition.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s combination of abstract elements and representational imagery communicates her connectedness to past generations and those generations yet to come. Merging color with the expressive possibilities of modern art this work looks at Indigenous heritage and cultural artifacts through a distinctly contemporary Native lens. Leaning into Tourist Season, we are confronted with the sharp outlines of pre-Columbian petroglyphs, whose undecipherable markings were made by ancient Native ancestors of long ago. The presence of a multistoried adobe structure whose distinctive architectural features draw tourists to the Southwest is an expression of differing cultural perspectives about the impact of cultural tourism on Native and non-Native people in the region.

View this work and more in "Resilient Beauty: Selections from the Native American Art Collection," on view now in Gallery 9! Join a docent-led exhibition tour on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 PM.
