“Distinctions between Virginians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers, and New Englanders, are no more. I am not a Virginian, but an American.” — Patrick Henry

A participant in virtually every aspect of the founding of America, Henry leveraged his eloquence as a Patriot and became the Revolution’s most renowned orator.

Happy 290th birthday, Patrick Henry! Huzzah! 🎉

Do you have Williamsburg scheduled for your Summer Travel Checklist? If not, now is the time to change that.

Thank you to The New York Times for featuring us!

“In the days leading up to the anniversary, nearby Colonial Williamsburg will present a swing and jazz dance party, a concert by Grammy Award-winning banjo player Alison Brown and her quintet and stagings of the musical “1776.” Its traditional historical character programming will feature special performances on July 4, including a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson and a military march and troop inspection with George Washington. That evening, the site will host Virginia’s semiquincentennial celebration, with musical performances… and the filmmaker Ken Burns, and a drone and fireworks show.”

On May 15, 1776, Virginia voted for independence at the Fifth Virginia Convention.

This last weekend, Colonial Williamsburg commemorated the 250th anniversary of this vote with an exclusive, large-scale onsite event called ‘The Flame of Revolution.’ This collaborative effort involved our performing arts team, historians, curators and tradespeople as well as at museums across the country to source and use images, portraits and documents from the 18th century.

Didn't get to make it out but want to know more? Good news! We are doing a Q&A with some Colonial Williamsburg historians to answer any questions you may have. Ask away in the comments below ⬇️ or submit a question in our stories ⬆️
