These images are magnified cross-sections of paint layer samples from Henry Ossawa Tanner’s Etaples Fisher Folk, a significant work from the permanent collection. With these samples, Christine Puza, the Head of Analytical Services at , provided critical scientific data, which both deepened the understanding of Tanner’s painting technique and directly informed Associate Paintings Conservator Amanda Kasman’s development of a treawtment strategy to safely clean and preserve this delicate painting.

Since 1977, the Williamstown + Atlanta Art Conservation Center’s skilled conservators have preserved thousands of important art and cultural heritage objects from hundreds of collections.

Please consider donating this to help us continue our support of hundreds of cultural organizations across the Northeast and Southeast that rely on us for conservation expertise. With your help we can ensure the preservation of art and material culture for centuries to come!

The more time we spend with a collection the more we accidentally dress like it…

Every six months our team of painting conservators visits the Empire State Plaza and the New York State Capital Building to complete condition checks and monitor the collection.

This time we got to bring Cat (our new summer intern) with us! She will be working in the paintings lab for the next few months before starting her third year this fall!

Safety first! 🥽

You might not recognize our paper conservators under all that PPE but they are hard at work safely removing old wallpaper that tested positive for lead and arsenic!

This Dufour scenic wallpaper in Historic Deerfield’s Stebbin House needed to be removed and stored before planned renovations to the building.

Check out Lindsay's (Asst. Objects Conservator at AACC) work on this 20th century framed quilt! The frame package was originally made using non-archival materials and was breaking down. Lindsay removed the quilt from the old backboard and made a new matboard with archival materials.

Here you can see her restitching the quilt to the new matboard!
