Amazing news 🎉

We have selected artist Kelly Akashi to create a site-specific artwork on the grounds of our new building, set to open in the fall of 2027!

The commissioned artwork will be installed in the east meadows, facing toward the Williams College campus. Akashi will visit Williams throughout 2026 to collaborate with the building’s architects Solid Objectives and Perry Dean Rogers and landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand and meet with the campus community.

“I'm looking forward to developing my new sculptures over this next year in close dialogue with the wooded and diverse landscape and the new building's design,” Akashi said. “The project centers on works that are at once botanical, geological, and sculptural. Their placement and scale invite museum visitors to create new relationships with the forests and plants in their daily environment. I’m excited to share more as the work begins.”

Happy 🎉

In honor of World Book Day—celebrated on April 23 because it is a symbolic date for world literature, marking the anniversary of the death or birth of several prominent authors, most notably William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes—we bring you news of our People’s Library project—in circulation!

Longtime WCMA visitors may remember our People’s Library project, which began in 2017 with a question: What book is helping you understand the world right now? In response, community members contributed more than four hundred titles, each offering a glimpse into how they make sense of the world around them. These books were on display in our Field Gallery Reading Room until our upper galleries closed at the end of 2024 to prepare for our move into our new home.

Now, before we settle into that new home next year, we’re sending the People’s Library out into the world—and you can help it keep circulating!

The community is now invited to take and keep any book(s) free of charge and continue its journey beyond the museum. Join us on Friday, May 1, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. here at WCMA to ensure the People’s Library lives on one reader at a time!

Browse the open shelves, try a “blind date” with a wrapped book, or let a Staff Pick guide you somewhere unexpected. Before you go, leave a note sharing why you chose what you did: Why this book, why now? These reflections will remain part of the project’s archive, creating a record of connection among readers.

And always keep reading 📚
