Today, we recognize and celebrate Juneteenth… a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and serves as an important reminder of our nation’s ongoing journey toward freedom, equality, and justice.

At the Wilton Historical Society, we believe history is more than the stories of the past. It is a tool for understanding our present and shaping our future.

Museums and historical societies are places where we can learn, reflect, ask questions, and engage in sometimes difficult but meaningful conversations about the experiences that have shaped our communities and our country.

Step into the past and experience the birth of a community in The Petition of Faith (1726), an immersive walking theater experience through the historic grounds of Sharp Hill Cemetery on Saturday, June 20th.🪦

Guided by a young girl named Faith, audiences journey back to a time when the residents of Wilton faced a difficult challenge: traveling long distances to worship in neighboring towns while dreaming of establishing a parish of their own. As Faith carries a petition through the graveyard, visitors encounter the men and women whose courage, sacrifice, and determination helped shape the future of Wilton.💛

Along the way, historical figures emerge from among the stones to share their stories, hopes, and struggles. Meet farmers, families, community leaders, and ministers whose lives were intertwined with the effort to build a church and create a stronger identity for a growing settlement. Through moving performances and the atmospheric setting of the cemetery itself, history comes vividly to life around you.

This immersive theatrical experience is brought to you through the collaborate efforts of Wilton Historical Society, Wilton Congregational Church and ArtSynergy Productions.

Performances will take place at 11 am and 1 pm on Saturday, June 20th. Each performance takes approximately an hour.

Join us this Thursday, June 18th from 7pm to 8pm for a lecture titled “More than a Pastime: The Evolution of Tourism in Wilton and Beyond”!✈️🚘🚌🚊

Tourism is far more than a pastime. It is an economic engine, a source of cultural propaganda, a pathway to self-improvement and healthfulness, and a shaper of identities. It fueled the reformation of landscapes, was utilized to various ends by political regimes of all stripes, and perhaps most of all, helped to convince all of us that we desperately “need a vacation.”

This lecture will trace the evolution of tourism globally, while illustrating how much larger changes impacted the people of Wilton, CT.

This event is free for Historical Society Members!

Here’s your Wilton Historygram!

The pond at Merwin Meadows remains closed following the flooding of August 2024, but there is hope of it reopening this summer. Featuring a concrete dock, sandy beach, bathhouse, and adjacent play areas, this one-acre pond first opened in July 1970. A report on safety at the pond in the mid-1980s stated that “bee stings rather than water-related incidents are the lifeguards’ biggest problem.” Family membership in 1986 cost $45; individual paid $20 and senior citizens got in for free. This recreational hot spot was initially purchased from the Merwin family in 1962 by Wilton Community Park, Inc., a creation of Wilton Kiwanis, with the intent of later selling the property to the town. The goal was to expand opportunities for summer swimming and other outdoor activities in the area. This lovely photograph found in the basement of Town Hall and now housed in the History Room shows the pond sometime in the 1980s or early 1990s.

Happening THIS Wednesday, June 10th!🎶🥁🎻

This year we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution! Join us at the Wilton Historical Society on Wednesday, June 10th at 7:00 pm for a presentation about music during the Revolution by Christine Hauck!🇺🇸

This lecture will focus on the American Revolutionary Era (1763–1783) and what the residents of Wilton in 1776 would have been listening to at the time.

A series of color films taken between the mid-1940s and early 1950s shows nostalgic scenes from Wilton’s Gilbert & Bennett School: schoolchildren running and playing outside, putting on their own circus and puppet shows, dancing, and doing their lessons.
