Who is this Civil War solder in the painting at the Windham Museum?

There is a beautiful oil painting hanging in the vestibule of the Windham Museum. The man in the painting was identified as “Civil War Soldier” when the Molly Reid Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution gave the portrait to the Windham Museum when their museum in Derry closed in 2002.

In the 24 years since the donation, many attempts were made to identify the soldier. Recently, a photo of the portrait was uploaded to several artificial intelligence sites along with the fact that the portrait had been owned by the Molly Reid DAR Chapter, suggesting a tie to a member of the Chapter with an ancestor who served in the Civil War. The uniform was identified as that of a lieutenant or captain in the Union Army.

One potential candidate is Matthew Thornton Betton, was a descendant of James Betton, who settled in Windham in 1753 The James Betton house is still standing on Londonderry Road in Windham.
• Born in Derry in 1837. Matthew Thornton Betton was the great-grandson of Dr. Matthew Thornton, signer of the Declaration of Independence
• He enlisted in September of 1862 and was appointed Captain Company K, 13th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry almost immediately. He later commanded the 81st New York Infantry and, after the Union occupation of Richmond, was made military commandant of Libby Prison and Castle
• Muriel Ferson, Betton’s granddaughter, was a member of the Molly Reid Chapter of the DAR and was the Regent from 1953-55. She died in 1955 leaving no children.

THE WINDHAM MUSEUM

The Windham Museum had a very successful Open House on August 9th. Our new page seems to have generated a lot of interest. Many attendees were working on the America’s 250 Windham Scavenger Hunt. While visitors were exploring the collection, students volunteers cataloged new donations from the Windham Garden Club and The Woman’s Service Club of Windham.

THE WINDHAM MUSEUM

The Windham Museum has entered into an agreement with the New England Historic Genealogical (NEHGS) to digitize our extensive collection of school records. The Windham Museum has a collection of records going back to 1850 from the seven one-room schoolhouses in town. The information in these records is a treasure trove of historical and genealogical information including names and ages of students, teachers’ names, curriculum details including textbooks used, descriptions of the conditions of the schools, and teachers’ salaries. NEHGS will be making a copy available to the Windham Museum for no charge, and publish these records on their website with the Windham Museum logo. This presents an opportunity to have a key collection digitized by an esteemed institution at no cost to the Museum. It will provide extremely positive publicity to the Museum and will make this significant material available to genealogists around the world.

THE WINDHAM MUSEUM

An Open House was held Wednesday evening, July 8th at The Windham Museum. Many attendees were participating in the America’s 250 Windham Scavenger hunt, including some local girl scouts. The trustees were grateful to receive a donation of a paper mache cow by Mary Long to add to our collection of items made by this artist from Windham. The Museum also received a collection of old deeds and documents from the 1800’s from the estate of Priscilla Low Pelletier, sister of Willis Low, longtime police chief of Windham. There are many familiar names in the documents, including Dinsmore, Cochran, and Nesmith.

The next Open House is Sunday, August 9th from 2:00 – 4:00.
