Little learners, naturalists, history buffs, farm workers, cigar connoisseurs all welcome. Valley Historical Society operates its Tobacco Museum within two buildings located on the pristinely beautiful 473-acre Northwest Park. HOURS

We are open to the public during growing season, that's tobacco-speak for spring through early fall. However, tours are available by appointment around the calendar y

ear. SCOPE

Cultivating tobacco's unique legacy, our mission is to preserve the plant's historical origins as well as the impact of its agricultural industry in Connecticut. The society houses many artifacts in the Gordon S. Taylor Tobacco Shed Museum related to farming practices, including a fantastic collection of antique farm equipment used in the growing of shade and broadleaf for which the Connecticut River Valley's known; since 1900, producing the highest quality wrapper—that is, the exterior leaf that surrounds the cigar filler—in the world! Adjacent to the shed, the John E. Luddy Archive galleries feature artisan cigar tools, books, employment records, and paraphernalia related to cigar trade and culture. Pay us a visit, and learn the history of the most important agricultural crop ever grown in Connecticut! DIRECTIONS

Very interesting reading.

The Cohen family has been farming in Ellington for 99 years. I recently had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Sanford (Sandy) Cohen about the history of the Cohen family and farm. I was amazed at the details that Sandy could remember; names and dates came easily to him as he told his family.....

The accessories that accompany ci**rs have an element of artistry, contributing to the legacy of cigar to***co as luxury. Each box, stamp, ring, ribbon, flannel meticulously crafted and selected with care. So often they are kept as heirlooms, repurposed again and again as keepsakes, while flannels too are often woven together to create quilted blankets.

If there’s a cigar heirloom cherished at home, tell us about it!

"After that summer in Connecticut, it was a bitter feeling going back to segregation. It was hard to understand why I could ride wherever I pleased on the train from New York to Washington and then had to change to a Jim Crow car at the nation's capital in order to continue the trip to Atlanta."

To all our attendees at the M.L.K. Legacy Event, thank you for joining us to hear Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's five letters from Connecticut read aloud. We look forward to expanding the reading into a signature yearly event, as we take pride in our community's history as having a hand in the transformative experience M.L.K. wrote about while he worked at the Cullman farm while only 15. In his theological seminary application, M.L.K. attributed that one experience toward motivating him to pursue a life dedicated to service.
