175 YEARS AGO TODAY - OCTOBER 21, 1850
The Aurora Branch Railroad (later the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy) inaugurates service between Aurora and Chicago, via Batavia and Turner Junction (West Chicago). The 12-mile branch railroad connected Aurora to the tracks of the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad (later Chicago & Northwestern), where it used those tracks and right of way to complete the journey into Chicago. There were two round trips each day.
By 1855, the railroad expanded to become the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy (CB & Q). By the 1920s, the railroad had 12,000 miles of track over 14 states, and the Burlington Route adopted the slogan, “Everywhere West.” Today, the railroad is the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF).

It was once the “world’s largest amusement park,” boasting the world’s first suspended roller coaster and first parachute ride. Today, it’s merely one of Chicago’s best loved memories. The names alone evoke nostalgia: the Pair-O-Chutes, Aladdin’s Castle, Shoot the Chutes and of course, the Bobs roller coaster. Join historian Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., for a look back at the history of Riverview, from its opening in 1904 to its sudden closing in 1967.

A friendly reminder for our community.
Hedges Station and the parking lot at Oakwood Park are CLOSED until the construction at the park is complete. Please do not park in the lot, even if the gate is open. Construction vehicles will be going in and out of the parking lot and the gate is locked at the end of the day.
We're hoping to be reopened in early July, fingers crossed the project goes well.
