Layered Looking Curator Highlight: Elements of Art 🔎🧠✨

What happens when you break a work of art down into its individual elements?

In this curator highlight, Director of Teaching and Learning and exhibition curator Julia Tanner takes a closer look at James Rosenquist’s "Off the Continental Divide," exploring how color, scale, patterns, and unexpected imagery come together to create meaning.

By slowing down and examining each component, the work begins to reveal new connections and interpretations.

Discover more of behind-the-scenes moments in art at the next Layered Looking Curator Talk on Saturday, May 16 at 2 p.m..

Have you ever wondered how a work of art comes together?

Director of Teaching and Learning and exhibition curator Julia Tanner explores Chuck Close’s "Keith" series, inviting you to look closely at the artist’s process.

Using a grid to break apart a portrait into carefully constructed units, Close reminds us that how something is made can be just as important as what we see.

Don’t miss "Layered Looking: Making Sense of Art," on view now.

Fun Fact: Known for his sardonic wit and innovative techniques, Grooms' Gertrude is a parody of Pablo Picasso’s infamous portrait of his patron Gertrude Stein.
