🌀 June 1st marks the official start of hurricane season. 🌀

As always, the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is dedicated to keeping our community safe and informed.

History is one of our best teachers. Did you know that in 1960, Hurricane Donna took a direct path right over Winter Garden? The eye of the storm passed directly over our town, leaving a lasting impact on our community and our historic citrus groves.

Our archives are filled with decades of local history, photographs, and firsthand accounts of how West Orange County has weathered the storms of the past. We invite you to visit the Heritage Foundation to explore this history and learn how our community has always stood strong and resilient.
Stay safe, stay prepared, and let’s look out for one another! 🏛️✨

Did you know the United States had a 49-star flag for just one year?

When Alaska became the 49th state in 1959, a new star was added to the American flag on July 4. But Hawaii didn’t officially become a state until later that summer, meaning its star couldn’t be added until July 4, 1960.

That brief moment in history created one of the rarest versions of our nation’s flag: the 49-star flag.

In this video, Museum Director Will McCoy shares the story behind a remarkable 49-star flag on display at the Winter Garden Heritage Museum, including its connection to Valencia College and how it became part of our collection.

Come explore this piece of American history as part of our America 250 exhibit, on display through July 31.

🇺🇸 Have you ever seen a 49-star flag in person?

On November 15, 1886, the Orange Belt Railroad stopped in Oakland for the first time. This photograph shows the townsfolk gathering at the new station. According to pioneer Josef Henschen, hundreds of people attended a community barbecue to celebrate the occasion. This rail stop was located where the West Orange Trail crosses between Cross and Tubb Streets today.

Notice that the tower of the station is not yet complete. Note also the Russian Architectural features; one of the owners of the Orange Belt Railroad was an exiled Russian nobleman, Peter Demens. He encouraged the rail line to build in the Russian style.

We honor George McMillan, one of Winter Garden’s most distinguished veterans, who served as a Flying Tiger—fighting against the Japanese in China before Pearl Harbor. We showcase his Chinese-issue military uniform from his time as a pilot in the Chinese military, a remarkable piece of local history.
