Hannibal Square Heritage Center

Hannibal Square Heritage Center The Hannibal Square Heritage Center was established in 2007 by Crealdé School of Art.

Our mission is to pay tribute to the past, present, and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community. The Hannibal Square Heritage Center hosts the nationally recognized "The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park," a permanent, museum-quality exhibition of more than 100 framed, archival pieces that capture the lives of Winter Park’s African-Ame

rican community spanning the 20th century, and "The Hannibal Square Timeline" that documents significant local and national events in African-American history since the Emancipation Proclamation. The center also offers a rotating Visiting Exhibition Series, community-created public art installations, as well as educational programs and that explore the African American experience, black heritage, cultural preservation, and southern folklore.

Juneteenth is a celebration of liberation and resistance.

On June 19, 1865, the Union forces arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the end of slavery. Two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. 161 years later, we celebrate this day and reflect on our history.

Join us in celebration at our 11th Annual Juneteenth event, Threads of Freedom: Memory, Resistance, and Legacy on Sunday, June 14, from 1–5 PM!

Free and open to the public, guests are invited to participate in a community arts workshop led by Form 2 Fashion to experience the art and tradition of quilting, and join a panel discussion to learn how this art form preserves sacred histories.

We can't wait to welcome you!

"This was at the Welbourne Day Nursery. I am in this picture sitting in front, on the left-hand side, next to the little boy. The children had been told to look straight ahead. Only one student didn’t follow directions…. The woman in the nurse’s uniform is Minnie May Ball."

Meet our panelists!
As a part of our 11th Annual Juneteenth Celebration, we will be hosting a panel about the sacred art of quilting. We invite you to join us in this discussion, learning from our featured speakers:
✨ Keidra Daniels Navaroli
✨ Phyllis Biffle-Elmore
✨ Dr. Denise Evans-Sheppard
✨ Janice Gilyard

“The conversation will be centered on textiles as a tangible cultural heritage asset that bridges the past and the present, and intersects with historical memory preservation and genealogical research, fostering healing for African Descent people navigating contemporary society. We celebrate this Juneteenth by honoring the interdisciplinary role of textiles as a form of resistance and reclamation, honoring the voices of formerly enslaved people and their descendants.” –Jasmine Harris, Manager of the Hannibal Square Heritage Center

The panel will take place at the Winter Park Community Center from 3–5 PM on Sunday, June 14.
This event is free and open to the public. Enjoy light bites and refreshments

From the Heritage Collection:
"This is a photograph of Justine Langwood, my best friend, at Mobile Beach, Altamonte Springs, Florida in the early 1950’s. We had no other beach to go to. This is where we black folks could go to the beach. On a typical Sunday morning, we would have gone to church, changed clothes, and go. We could always get a ride, because we were pretty young girls. We never really had the chance to do and be what we probably would have liked to have done. But you know how it was with blacks. We were just held down. Nothing you could do about it."

From the Heritage Collection:
"This photograph was taken in 1940 and is a picture of the Winter Park Social Club taken at a banquet at the Everready Club on South Street in Orlando, Florida. My Aunt Lila was quite a socialite! She would have club meetings and parties at Mr. Barbour's house. Mr. Barbour would let her bring her friends over, and they had a lot of fun there.
The fellows were not there. When they wanted to have their big gala things, that's when they would invite their husbands and boyfriends.
This event right here is, I guess, a banquet they would have once a year. They all got dressed up and went to Orlando to this club. This building no longer exists, but the Everready Club still exists."
