“King of Hearts” Playing Cards Trompe L’Oeil Painting by husband and wife team Elena and Michel Gran. “For these two naturalised Parisians, perhaps the greatest honour came in 1996, when the Louvre Museum purchased a work called ‘Red and Black’ for Musée Français de la Carte à Jouer. This painting was originally created in 1998 and sold in London to a collector who eventually brought it back to New England and then into our collection

When I was a little kid my mom would read countless books to me - today is my mom’s birthday and this recent acquisition ‘Mother’s Love’ by Swedish artist Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius makes me think of those times. If these paintings could tell their stories - this one was painted by the artist for her family, sold at Sothebys in London in 1990 to Maconnal Mason (presumably) and then to a private collector in the US and is now on its way to Maine for its next chapter

“Bedouin at the Oasis,” an Orientalist oil on canvas by 19th century British artist William James Webb. The work was miscatalogued, but after some research the monogram signature, date, and style led to the correct attribution. Webb made a number of pilgrimages to the Middle East in the second half of the 19th century. While not the subject of a while owl, which sold at auction for nearly $1M, it is a nice example the artist’s work and an exciting find. More than half the fun I have in this business is the hunt!

Sometimes we are drawn to objects that weren’t painted with oils or cast in bronze. This very rare poncho from the Nasca people of Peru dates around 200 to 400AD. It is amazing that such an unbelievably fragile, but well crafted, piece could survive through so much history. We love the geometric aesthetic and colors of this rare textile. It doesn’t hurt that it has excellent provenance - we are happy to have it in our collection - now where to put it…

believed that “The sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination,” and this sculptor from Taiwan has quite the imagination! Long-Bin Chen is a self-taught artist from Taiwan who gathers discarded books and magazines for his sculpture busts of historical figures, giving a renewed value to the meaning of discarded supplies. Incorporating texts that are relevant to a particular sculpture, Chen seeks to combine ideas and concepts from the East with those of the West

Fantastic 17th century wool and silk canvas work with a story to tell. My favorite is the King lying in bed reading ‘The Law’ with a seemingly content chap in the gallows in the background
