The Maine Art Gallery

The Maine Art Gallery The nonprofit Maine Art Gallery has celebrated and inspired artists and people who love art for sixty seven years.

We exhibit, gather, educate and promote art in a beautiful historic space for appreciating our creative community. The Maine Art Gallery was founded in 1954 by Wiscasset resident Mildred Burrage. In her search for a building with abundant natural light, she found the Old Academy Building which was in need of renovation – just her expertise! In 1981 the State of Maine honored her with its Historic

Preservation Commission Award. As an artist trained in America and France, Burrage was officially recognized many times for her work as a cultural benefactor. She was the first Maine woman to receive the National Achievement Award given by the National Association of University Women. As an incorporated nonprofit, the Maine Art Gallery continues to exhibit the best that Maine artists produce. Over the years we have exhibited the works of Gene Klebe, Peter Cook, John Follinsbee, Vincent Hartigan, Dahlov Ipcar, William Goadby Lawrence, Morris Levine, John Lorence, Olive Metcalf, Louise Nevelson, Waldo Pierce, Henry Varnum Poore, Frederick Rockwell, Jason Schoener, William and Stell Shevis, Laurence Sisson, Warren Spaulding, Ernest Thompson, William Thon, Andrew Winter, Andrew Wyeth and William Zorach.

Panel discussion with Anna Fiedler of Maine Farmland Trust will highlight the important role farms play in our communities. Erica Berman, co-founder of Veggies to Table, a farm in Newcastle that donates its organic produce to locals in need, will discuss her farm's mission. Owner Toby Tarpinian and his mother, Susan, who founded Morning Glory Natural Foods, will talk about the business and its fascinating history. Morning Glory has been in business for 40 years and provides a market for many local vegetable farmers, dairies, organic meat farms, and bakeries.

The talk will be followed by a reception with goodies provided by Morning Glory Natural Foods.

Back River Bistro in Wiscasset is sponsor of this program. The Gallery is grateful to: Les Fossel Restoration Resources, sponsor of “Art to Table;” Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty, season sponsor; Ames True Value Hardware, capital sponsor; and Maine Farmland Trust, sponsor of the opening reception.

What a wonderful reception for the Art to Table exhibit on such a rainy day. Some of the paintings and art creations depict our relationship with the soil, with the animals that provide for us, where we consume and buy our food and also our relationship to each other. We also have the whimsical and the abstract!
A great gathering for a very interesting and beautiful exhibit. Missed the reception? No worries, the exhibit is here until June 14. See web page for more info.
