A new painting has arrived at Sylvan Gallery—and Koa was on hand to supervise. 🐾🎨

Maine artist Stan Moeller has just brought us Feeding Frenzy, a dynamic and exhilarating painting filled with movement, color, light, and vigorous brushwork. 🌊🪽

Stan captures the energy of a flock of gulls with such honesty and spontaneity that you can almost feel the wind and hear the commotion. It’s a wonderful example of what makes his paintings so exciting to experience in person.

A practicing artist for most of his life, Stan and his wife, Tammy, moved to York, Maine, nearly 30 years ago. He has taught plein air painting on Monhegan Island for nearly 20 years, as well as workshops in Tuscany and the South of France, and has traveled to Cuba to sketch and paint.

Stan says:

“I am just as intrigued by the way the light wraps around a subject as the subject itself. It seems like I’m always painting in my head. Whenever I’m looking, I’m painting…” 🎨

✨ Two beautiful paintings that sold during opening week! ❤️

We’re so pleased to share these two paintings from Neal Hughes and Crista Pisano’s A Shared History at Sylvan Gallery. Both found new homes during the exhibition’s opening week! 🎉

For Neal Hughes, Maine offers an endless source of inspiration:

“Its rugged coastline, quiet harbors, working boats, rocky islands, changing weather, and distinctive light offer an endless source of inspiration. The landscape is constantly changing, yet it retains a timeless character that invites artists to return again and again.”

Both artists also spent a week on Monhegan Island creating new work for this year’s exhibition. For Crista Pisano, arriving on Monhegan was an especially memorable experience:

“A good friend of mine calls this place ‘catnip to artists,’ and it’s the truth.”

There is so much to see in A Shared History, from the familiar Maine places that have inspired these artists for years to their newest work from Monhegan Island.

The first painting from and ’s exhibition, A Shared History at Sylvan Gallery, just went out the door! 🎉 The exhibition officially opens tomorrow, Friday, August 21, but the new collectors couldn’t resist taking it home with them to Mercer Island, WA. ❤️

Here’s a look at the painting before it left the gallery—and I’m hoping to hold on to the others so you can see them all at the reception and meet the artists on Thursday, August 27, from 4–7 p.m. during wiscasset_artwalk! 🎨🥂

This exhibition is particularly meaningful to me. Both artists have a long history with the gallery, and over the years, those professional relationships have grown into lasting friendships. Their annual exhibition has become a tradition that brings them back to Maine each August to paint, reconnect with friends, and create new work for Sylvan Gallery. ❤️

The exhibition features recent paintings inspired by the artists’ favorite Maine locations, along with work created during plein air competitions throughout the country. Additional paintings will be added soon from their recent painting excursion to Monhegan Island. 🌊🎨

& are getting ready to head off to ! 🎨⛴️

Neal is off to teach a three-day plein air painting workshop, followed by a full week of painting on the island. And as you can see, there’s a bit of paring down to do before everything fits in the cars! 😂🖌️

Of course, Finn the dachshund has to inspect the packing… especially the bag with the stuffed lobster. 🦞🐾 (Crista is known for having the perfect accessories for every occasion!)

New paintings by both artists have just arrived at the gallery (and will soon be on the website), with more to come after they return from Monhegan! 🌊🎨

🎵 The beautiful music of Torren Nehrboss was the perfect accompaniment to the paintings at July’s Wiscasset Art Walk where this stunning Stan Moeller piece was chosen by returning collectors to transform their space. ❤️

Stan Moeller’s A Dinner at the Island Inn

There were so many things that drew visitors to this painting throughout the summer. Stan’s lush, painterly brushwork captures the warmth of the dining room at the Island Inn on Monhegan, filled with figures, rich detail, and beautiful window light that gently envelops the scene. ☀️

Many visitors immediately recognized it as the dining room of the inn that welcomes you after stepping off the ferry on Monhegan Island. 🛥️ One of my favorite details to point out was that the waiter dressed in black on the left is actually a self-portrait of Stan.

🎨 Stan has a special connection to Monhegan Island. In the mid-1990s, he traveled there to paint and met resident artist (and musician) Don Stone (1929–2015), who became his most important mentor and a dear friend.

For nearly 20 years, Stan has returned to teach plein air workshops on Monhegan, sharing his knowledge and love of painting with students each September. It’s a place that continues to inspire him. 🌊

Congratulations, Stan, on this well-deserved sale—and thank you for continuing to inspire all of us!

🎨 A look back at Paul Batch’s live painting demonstration at Sylvan Gallery!

In mid-July, Paul Batch visited the gallery with a collection of new paintings for his exhibition, Exploring Light, on view through August 15. While he was here, visitors had the opportunity to watch him paint as he demonstrated his process right in the gallery.

✨ The painting of Louds Island (off Round Pond in Bristol) is now complete and will soon be on display! Scroll through to enjoy moments from the demonstration—people gathering around to watch Paul paint, conversations about his work, and the finished painting at the end.

Paul reflects:

“Maine continues to inspire me with its endless variety. The power of the ocean, the timeless character of its rocky shores, the quiet beauty of its inland woods, and the ever-changing seasons all find their way into these paintings. Some explore sweeping vistas, while others focus on quieter, more intimate moments. Together they reflect my ongoing pursuit of light, atmosphere, and the enduring spirit of the Maine landscape.”

🎨 Beyond his painting career, Paul is also a respected educator who has spent more than a decade teaching online workshops, live demonstrations, and mentoring artists in palette selection, brushwork, light, and composition.
