Explore the photography studio of pioneer photographer H.H.Bennett... the man who made the Dells famous! H.H.

Combining advancements in technology with a love for natural landscapes, photographer H.H. Bennett captured the images that made Wisconsin Dells famous. Bennett captured the heart and soul of areas he photographed, revealing scenic landscapes, bustling urban centers, and people discovering a natural playground. His works have been displayed worldwide including The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, The Smithsonian Institution, and the Center for Creative Photography. Bennett was not only an outstanding landscape photographer, but he was also an inventor, promoter and entrepreneur. Bennett pioneered the "instantaneous shutter" in 1886, photographing his son Ashley's leap to stand rock - now a Dells icon! Today the restored 1875 studio and museum house Bennett’s original homemade cameras, darkroom equipment, glass plate collection, studio props and equipment. Using the 3D photography method of the stereoview, Bennett took hundreds of stunning 3D photographs that amazed Americans across the country with the beauty of the Dells. Be sure to explore Bennett’s large collection 3D photos in the museums’ special digital imaging exhibit! Daily Admission for 2025:

Are you a Wisconsin artist or maker? We would love to see your work!

Opening in late 2027 on Wisconsin’s Capitol Square in Madison, the Wisconsin Historical Society’s new flagship building, the Wisconsin History Center, will take a modern approach to sharing our state’s history and connecting communities.

The first-floor retail store will extend those stories beyond the galleries, offering visitors and the public a unique selection of merchandise inspired by Wisconsin’s people, places, and history. The store will feature custom-made products alongside consignment, wholesale, and collaborative work from artists and makers across the state.

The stories shared at the Wisconsin History Center and throughout Wisconsin are shaped by the communities that have made an impact on our state. We want our retail space to reflect that influence and celebrate the creativity found in communities across Wisconsin.

We’re inviting Wisconsin artists and makers to help us bring those stories to life. Through this open call, we’re seeking original artwork, products, and merchandise that celebrate the people, places, cultures, and stories that make Wisconsin unique.

This week we are taking a look at our items from... The Landmark Project!!!

The Landmark Project is a company dedicated to supporting the long-term health, accessibility, and protection of our public lands. Their commitment to eco-friendly & sustainable materials, recycled fibers, and their use of 100% BCI organic cotton are just a few reasons we LOVE The Lankmark Project at H.H. Bennett Studio!
They are dedicated to liminating unnecessary plastic from their products to reduce their negative environmental impact; turning to unbleached paper and other natural fibers help replace plactic waste.

The Lankmark Project is partnered with organizations working on the front lines of conservation; partners like the National Parks Conservation Association, the National Forest Foundation, Leave No Trace, and the U.S. Forest Service. They work along side these conservation partners through a combination of financial support, product collaborations, and hands-on volunteer efforts. Things like trail work, river cleanups, and public awareness campaigns are just some of the things TLP does!
Through special projects, regional initiatives, and on-the-ground support where it’s needed most; The Landmark Project works close with smaller, community-based organizations because TLP knows they are essential to the health and enjoyment of local landscapes.

Show below is a beautiful shot looking through the Port Hole at C**n Castle. Through the "port hole" you can see farm buildings in the far distance. The farm depicted in the backgrouing is the C**n Castle Farm located in Juneau County. This image was taken circa 1890-1899 by the man himself, H.H. Bennett!

✨Throw Back Thrusday✨

Pictured below is the Kilbourn railroad depot, train, passengers and crew. They are loading up and getting ready to take a beautiful ride along to railway! Along that ride they will be able to see all the amazing landscape that H.H. Bennett fell in love with when he came to this area. That unique beauty is what kept him in the Midwest his whole photography career, and got people to come see the beauty for themselves! Seeing what the Wisconsin Dells looked like back when it was Kilbourn City is just one of the magical things of coming to H.H. Bennett Studio; getting to see original cameras that H.H. made himself is another!
