Pictured below is a portrait of Francis (Frankie) Irene Douty.

While H.H. Bennett is credited as the famous 1800's photographer of the Wisconsin Dells, he was not the only one taking portraits in our historic studio!

Frankie Douty, H.H. Bennett's first wife, also took portraits of people in the studio. While H.H. Bennett was out taking landscape photographs, Frankie was back at the studio running the buisness and taking portraits. Those portraits were a substaintial part of their income and helped to keep the studio running. Without Frankie's hard work, H.H. Bennett would not have been able to take ALL of the beautiful landscape photographs he was able to during their time together.

Shout out to Frankie for helping to secure the bag back in the 1800's!!!

H.H. Bennett Studio & Museum is officially OPEN for the 2026 season!!!

This season we will be open Thursdays- Mondays from 11am-5pm. We will be open from May 23rd till September 28th.

Come explore the Wisconsin Dells and the life of the man who helped transform a small lumber town into the nationally known tourist destination it is today. Step into the 1875 photography studio of Henry Hamilton Bennett and dive into the story behind the Dells. On your walk through the museum, you can see the stunning landscape photographs that can never be seen in nature again! You can recreate “The Leap,” as you attempt to jump the same distance seen in one of Bennett’s most iconic photos. Steer a riverboat down the Wisconsin River and explore Wisconsin Dells history, including the history of the Ho-Chunk Nation, on whose ancestral land the museum stands today. And see our exhibit for the man that taught H.H. Bennett photography, George Houghton.
