This past Sunday, May 31 The Woodstock Museum was honored to attend the re-marking of the grave of Revolutionary War Soldier John Ignatius Effinger at the St. Paul's Reformed Church Cemetery on S. Church Street in Woodstock, VA, hosted by the Narrow Passage Chapter of the NSDAR.

Mr. Effinger was a native of the Palatinate, and traveled to London where he joined the British Army and landed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1776, but he deserted and joined General Washington's army at Valley Forge. After the War he relocated to Woodstock and became a member of the St. Paul's Reformed Church (at that time the German Reformed Church).

We are honored to participate in this special ceremony and to carry forward Mr. Effinger's legacy at our Museum! The original bronze plaque on Mr. Effinger's grave was donated to the Museum, and it will join Mr. Effinger's Ophicleide (a musical instrument) at the Woodstock Museum - come by and see both artifacts!

The "Restore the Porch" project is estimated to cost at least $150,000, and the museum relies on community support to reach the finish line.

Laughlin Auctions, Inc. will be holding a LIVE auction at the auction house in Edinburg on Saturday May 23rd starting at 9am to celebrate their 40th Anniversary! Come support the Woodstock Museum by bidding on lots #22 through 73, and #251-253!! The proceeds from the sale of these deaccessioned items will go toward the Museum's "Restore the Porch" fundraising campaign. Hope to see you there!

Start the year by learning, sharing, and helping us keep local history alive. Whether you love meeting new people, enjoy storytelling, or simply want to give back, we’d be thrilled to have you on our team. Training is provided - just bring your passion! The museum is open Saturday and Sundays, May through October, and our docents are asked to volunteer for one three-hour session per month.
