To prepare for this exhibition, Andrea Sulzer and I sat down to discuss her work. Over the course of the show, we’ll share excerpts from that conversation.

SB: This work is a significant departure, but it also weaves in aspects from your prior work, including your last solo show. There’s a willingness to be more personal, but also more opaque and playful. You’ve embedded references and whatever you’re interested in onto the canvas without worrying about how they’ll be received. As a result, there’s a dynamism in the show that is very refreshing. I can’t think of an artist or an exhibit I’ve seen in the past ten years that simultaneously includes such diversity and clarity.

AS: Thank you. There’s absolutely nothing to lose in taking risks. There’s no stake. No one’s going to get hurt. No one’s going to die. The world’s not going to end. You know, it’s just paint on a canvas, so get over yourself. Now, if I have a thought or an image or … whatever, if something comes, an urge, then I’ll try it. A lot of times it doesn’t work because my ideas are s**t. Most of the time they really are. Well, not s**t, but I don’t trust them, you know? They come from a different place. But I know when it’s right.

✨Congratulations✨ to James Parker Foley on his solo NYC debut, opening this Saturday, August 29th at Transmitter.

Point of No Return

JAMES PARKER FOLEY

August 22 – September 27, 2026
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, August 29th, 6-8pm
ARTIST TALK: September 19th, 4-5:30pm

Transmitter is pleased to present Point of No Return, a solo exhibition by James Parker Foley. Made across a period of profound personal transformation, this exhibition brings together two bodies of drawings: a group of graphite images begun during a residency in Mississippi in October 2022, and a subsequent body of colored pencil works begun in October 2023.

For Foley, the dream-like worlds within his drawings are places to physically and narratively work through the difficult labor of becoming oneself (including the curiosity and play that can accompany that challenging work).

Foley’s lexicon of symbols–hats, purses, the moon, and traffic cones–serve as recurring characters that support the efforts the figures are undertaking: making peace with doubt, living with paradox and mystery, and embracing fantasy without judgment.
