“… a personal favorite … The Mnemosyne is not often included in depictions of Hades, but it is the river parallel to the Lethe. To drink from its waters is to remember, to welcome back into oneself all of what was - to become whole again.”

In Classical Greek mythology, the river Phlegethon symbolizes a soul’s purification through suffering. Originally depicted as a river of blood and fire, Nola Parker has tamed those hellish scapes to align with the land around her as she moved through her own complex trauma.

The healing in this work is palpable without being heavy. There is a stylistic playfulness in Parker’s work. Her paintings feel like coming home.

Parker was indeed coming home to herself - healing.

How will they feel for you? Only one way to find out … see you soon!

LOVE this piece in the current issue of Down East magazine featuring five Maine painters making waves, including our very own James Foley! ✨✨✨

An excerpt:

“Evidence of the divine glance against the carnal in Foley’s work. Outlines of people bathed in light tread blue-black water, or they hold one another. Is it a baptism? Is it s*x? Can it be both? Objects take on unlikely roles - a watering can, for instance, becomes an eclipse.” - Charlie Pike

The article on Foley includes writing by Charlie Pike with glimpses into Foley’s practice by the PMA’s associate curator of modern and contemporary art, Sayantan Mukhopadhyay.

“He’s an exceptional colorist,’ Portland Museum of Art associate curator of modern and contemporary art Sayantan Mukhopadhyay says. “He handles paint so very well, and there are so many textures present.”

Tara Rice did a phenomenal job photographing every artist in the issue, capturing them in their studios in ways that feel like the perfect blend of considered and candid.

Congratulations to Jay Stern , Emilie Stark-Menneg , Tessa Greene O'Brien and Sascha Braunig . Lovely!

“Growing up in Vermont, the outdoors was a calming, reflective, and often mystical space for me. This feeling of connectedness with nature has always been a driving force in my life and work. Photographs from my daily life act as anchoring references in my colorful, acrylic
landscapes. I often work from a single image, but in my new work, I use collected photos to create a collage of a new, fictional landscape.”
