Summer camp at the EcoTarium helps spark creativity and inspire a love of science and nature as children play, develop their communication and collaboration skills, and make new friends. For many children, it’s the first time learning feels like an adventure!

Your support for summer camp scholarships will help ensure that every child—regardless of their family’s financial circumstances—has the opportunity to discover, explore, and imagine what’s possible.

Help send a child to a week of the EcoTarium’s Discovery Camp. Every gift matters - make your gift today!

Speaker: Mary Knapp, Haystack Observatory
Saturday, June 13th, 2026
5:00 – 5:45 pm

Topic: Exploring the Uncharted Sky at the Longest Wavelengths: Exoplanets, Solar Storms, and the Time Before the Stars

Scientists have built space telescopes to access parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that we can’t see from the surface of the Earth: X-rays, gamma rays, UV, and infrared. There is one part of the spectrum that does not (yet!) have a dedicated space telescope: the low frequency or long wavelength end of the spectrum. Dr. Knapp will talk about science in the low-frequency sky, why we don’t have a telescope to study this part of the spectrum, and how developments in our current era may enable us to fill in this gap in our ability to study the universe.

Mary Knapp is a research scientist at MIT Haystack Observatory. Currently, Dr. Knapp splits her time between the GO-LoW NIAC Phase II study and a project management role in the NSF-funded SpectrumX center.

We hope to see you there!

This past weekend, we held a ribbon cutting ceremony to open up the EcoTarium's newest exhibit..."Music: Journey through the Sounds of East Asian Rhythms"!

This interactive exhibit celebrates the percussive instruments and sounds of East Asian cultures and encourages visitors to move and perform. Visitors can explore an array of traditional instruments and sounds, from Japanese singing bowls to Chinese gongs to a traditional Korean Buk drum. Mounted mirrors are placed like stages within each area to inspire visitors to move and dance while others play music. 🥁

This exhibit will be on display through Mid-August, so come check it out and make some music! Plan your visit on our website: https://ecotarium.org/visit/

On Friday, May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity, the EcoTarium hosted the First Massachusetts Biodiversity Day, organized by the Mass Department of Fish and Game. This event celebrated our state’s incredible biodiversity, with partners from across the state joining together to celebrate local action to conserve wildlife, restore habitats, and connect communities with nature.

With genersous support from the Commonwealth's Community Biodiversity Grants program, the EcoTarium is leading an ecological assessment and biodiversity strategy for the 55 acre Museum property, with a plan to improve wildlife habitats and enhance educational experiences for our visitors. This project will create an educational pathway with interpretive signage focused on freshwater and forest habitats and biodiversity in the Museum's Lower Pond and Kalil Pavillion areas.

The EcoTarium offers a number of programs to educate the public and encourage engagement in "citizen-science" to support the identification of local species and preserve the important biodiversity found in Massachusetts. The improvements to the Kalil Paviliion and Lower Pond trail will enable the Museum to expand and enhance biodiversity-focused programming for our visitors.

Did you know that it’s World Turtle Day?? We are always happy to celebrate our animals, so make sure to stop by, say hello, and show all the EcoTarium's turtle residents some love today. 🐢

One of our Northern Red-bellied Cooter turtles is pictured here. We had to say goodbye to the foursome this past Wednesday, as it was time for them to be returned to the wild. We enjoyed their stay at the EcoTarium and are thrilled that they thrived under the care of our expert zoo team. We wish them well in their new habitat! In September, we will welcome another foursome to the EcoTarium - stay tuned!
