From James Privitt: see prior post comments.

Stonehaven is not just a historic home — it is also a taxpayer-funded asset, and whatever happens next should protect both the house and the public investment already made into it.

My goal is simple: Stonehaven should be preserved, useful, and sustainable.

My proposal is to relocate Stonehaven into historic downtown Wylie, restore it accurately, and operate it as a small heritage inn and flexible community venue. This would keep the home active and maintained, support downtown businesses and events, and ensure it never becomes a future burden on taxpayers again.

Just as importantly, I have the financial resources to restore and maintain Stonehaven long-term. Public funds have already gone into keeping it afloat, and the long-term plan should ensure taxpayers are no longer burdened by ongoing costs — and that the money already spent is ultimately paid back through property taxes and revenue the property generates.

Thank you to everyone who supports preservation and Wylie history.

*******
For additional context: I’ve been preserving historic buildings for over 15 years, and most recently led the relocation and restoration planning for the 1870s landmark Scott-Barker House in Melissa, TX.

My intent with Stonehaven is a historically accurate restoration inside and out — down to the furnishings and interpretive details — with the goal of preserving and telling the story of the Stone family and early Wylie history. I’m also committed to working with the City and community to ensure the house can serve flexible public and educational uses for schools, local organizations, events, and visitors.

She has truly come so far, help us get her back to her original glory!

I am humbly asking that the community get involved and learn about Stonehaven, the innovation of the man William Stone who built the house and help us save her for today’s community but also for generations of Wylie families to come.

When you look at other Historic Districts, and you know you love visiting the awesome Historic Districts of McKinney and Plano and so many others, Wylie has neglected to save and protect so much of its rich history, especially our Train Depot, Housing and Historic buildings.

BUT, we are in a place today to change all of that moving forward.

Did you know that in Texas once a structure is 50 years old it can be submitted for Historical Designation by the State of Texas?

As the City of Wylie works to built up and create a more community friendly, walkable, vibrant district with businesses we can all support we must also save, rescue and build up our current historical assets and strive to build historically accurate new structures so that in 50 years we can enjoy, be proud of and yes compete with the Historic Districts of McKinney, Plano and others.

I want to hear future generations talk about and share “Man have you visited the Wylie Historic District” or “Man I went to a great community event this week in the Wylie Historic District”…

Please take a step out and FORWARD and help us in this effort to save and restore Stonehaven for the future. YOU can have a voice in her future.

Watch for posting of next City Council meetings and reach out to your Mayor, Council and City Manager.

Statement from Mr Privitt:

The city can verify that I provided proof of more than enough funds and income for the full restoration and ongoing maintenance. And a model in which the house will be self sufficient and not rely on tax payer funds.

My goal is to restore Stonehaven so it feels like stepping back into historic Wylie—authentic in character and furnishings, but with modern comfort and safety. It would serve as a heritage inn and community venue where locals, visitors, schools, and organizations could gather, host events, and stay overnight while supporting downtown. This plan wasn’t something I dreamed up in isolation—it was shaped through direct consultation with City leadership and community input to meet a real need and long-term demand.

I am excited to let everyone know that discussions by City Council continued this month in a big way in an effort to secure the restoration and preservation of Stonehaven.

The house that was moved 10 years ago finally has the real potential to be restored and protected as a historical asset for our City and Historic District.

Please attend the upcoming City Council meeting on January 13th at 6pm as the process moves forward and to get accurate information on this project.

Who is interested in programs that teach Wylie History, Texas History and Family History (Genealogy) to children and adults?

Wouldn’t it be exciting to see how they dressed and lived in the days that Stonehaven was built and learn more about Wylie’s history and its founding families?

Let me hear from you!
