Kurinuki box by Susan Scott of Palouse Creek Pottery in North Bend, OR π 2βx2βx3-1/2β π βKurinuki is a Japanese term relating to a particular hand-forming process. This technique employs carving out a shaped solid block of clay to obtain interior space. These boxes were hand-carved from sandy clay, then painted with underglaze and fired in our wood kiln. When I began carving them, I was reminded of reliquaries, maybe for a beloved fish or bird or any small petβs ashes. They could also hold a special gift, like an engagement ring or another significant piece of jewelry. I have now made many other types of Kurinuki β dishes with handles and sections, bowls that are divided in half and have ornate carved handles β each has a very hand-carved appearance.β β Susan Scott π¦ I ship π» view on my blog: http://www.touchstone-gallery.com/2025/05/box-by-susan-scott-of-palouse-creek.html π¬ PM for more details
