The Hudson River Museum is the largest cultural institution in Westchester County and a multidisciplinary complex that draws its identity from its site on the banks of the Hudson River, seeking to broaden the cultural horizons of all its visitors. The Museum collections focus on 19th-century through contemporary American Art; Glenview, an 1876 house on the National Register of Historic Places; Hud

son Riverama, an environmental teaching gallery; a state-of-the-art, 120-seat planetarium, and a 400-seat outdoor amphitheater. Last night, we were thrilled to honor featured artist Robert Peterson at the , and today, “Robert Peterson: Journeys” opens to the public!

Peterson’s monumental yet deeply intimate portraits are luminous love letters to contemporary Black life. His paintings elevate everyday figures into inspiring, heroic archetypes—hardworking mothers, protective fathers, loyal siblings—and, in the process, expands the thematic parameters of classical portraiture.

Working from black-and-white photographs, the artist introduces a rich palette into his work, lavishing attention on the beauty of Black skin with sensual touches of blues and golds.

“Cowboys come in many colors. It’s time Black cowboys get their due.” - Ron Tarver

“Black Cowboys in America: Photographs by Ron Tarver” is now open to the public! Experience this outstanding exhibition with photographs by Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer Rov Tarver that illuminate Black cowboy life on ranches, at rodeos, and in urban streetscapes. Through this series, which he originally did for Philadelphia Inquirer, Tarver affirms the thriving culture of Black-owned ranches, rodeo operations, parades, inner-city riders, and retired cowhands—and invites deeper conversation about what it means to be an American cowboy.

The exhibition is accompanied by an 160-page catalog “The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America” by Ron Tarver, with an essay by Art T. Burton, an expert on the history of Black cowboys.

Artist Robert Peterson is one of our esteemed honorees at this year’s gala and the exhibition “Robert Peterson: Journeys” opens to the public this Friday.

You have the special opportunity to bid on his print titled “The Watchman” in the HRM Gala Auction! Robert Peterson wrote this poem to accompany the artwork:

“The Watchman.

He stands beneath the same sky that watched over his ancestors, where the red dirt remembers every footprint and the wind still hums their names.

In a land known for its sunsets and storms, he is both shelter and a signal.
A quiet strength rooted in tradition, honor, and sacrifice.”

Robert Peterson is a contemporary artist based in Oklahoma. Through this lens, Peterson constructs images that are both intimate and expansive, contributing to a broader reimagining of contemporary figurative painting.

“I started doing paintings that were influenced by the linoleum floors we had as kids—these big roses, and mostly flowers, and all these curlicues. I wanted to go in just the opposite direction of ‘less is more.’” —Robert Zakanitch

Happy Birthday to , who was born in 1935! This painting from the illustrates how the artist looked to non-traditional sources to inform his signature style. He celebrated the decorative arts as essential to the human spirit. In this joyful work, the curves of a Rococo vase lead to a fireworks display of wildflowers, peppered with drawings of ornamental motifs and fauna.
