Wednesday Wanderings in the Archives: The Presbyterian cemetery in York Springs (located going south on Old Harrisburg Road) is the final resting place of Robert Livingston, a private with Battery D, 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (112th Pennsylvania). Livingston was twenty years old when he mustered into service at Carlisle on February 29, 1864. He died from dysentery near Petersburg, Virginia in July 1864.

No doubt he would have been remembered in 1895 when about 3,000 people from the area observed Memorial Day in the grove at the Presbyterian Church (only the cemetery is left on the hill). As reported in the "Comet", around 2 pm a procession began in town which included citizens and the orator of the day, the Honorable S. McSwope, as well as the Honorable Cyrus G. Beales, the Revs. Gardner, Reese, and Straub, members of the Peter Miller G.A.R. Post, Latimore Council Jr. O.U.A.M, and a large number of Sunday School scholars and teachers. They were led by Civil War veteran, William T. Jobe, who served as a private in Company K.

Citizens of York Springs and the surrounding area will gather this Monday, May 25 at Sunnyside Cemetery at 10 AM for Memorial Day observance by the York Springs Lions Club.

Wednesday Wanderings in the Archives: On behalf of the Ye Olde Sulphur Spa Historical Society, the Wednesday Wanderer invites the community to an Open House & Exhibit Opening on Sunday, May 3, from 2-5 pm at our museum.

After a year of renovation, reorganization and research, we are ready to "re-open" our exhibit spaces on the main floor and show-off our newly renovated basement.

In 2025, we completely renovated the museum’s basement area into usable archive space in which to house their growing collection of artifacts and ephemera associated with northeastern Adams County. Work on the new space is now complete. The Society is opening the renovated basement to thank those in the community who have supported the project and for those who wondered why the two sea containers were sitting in the parking lot for so many months! (Note: If you are curious as to what it looks like, this is the day to see it as this space will not be open to the public.)

While the renovations were happening in the basement, we worked upstairs reorganizing as well as researching for our new exhibits. Our exhibit for the nation's 250th celebration, "In Pursuit of Life, Liberty and Happiness", will make its debut on May 3rd as well. This exhibit tells the story of northeastern Adams County from the time of the dinosaurs to the creation of the New Republic. It will introduce visitors to early land owners and settlers, early roads, buildings, local soldiers who served during the Revolutionary War and those who did not support the Revolution such as the Bermudian Tories.

We are also featuring "From Buckets to Engines" in honor of the 100th anniversary of the organization of the York Springs Fire Company. The fire company has progressed from its very humble beginnings to being an indispensable part of the community and we celebrate them.

Our Faith & Fellowship exhibit focusing on other local organizations both past and present now has a permanent space in the museum. Visitors can learn about the Mademoiselle Club, IOOF, I.O.I.A, Girl Scouts, Jaycees, and local faith communities. This exhibit joins the museum’s other permanent exhibits focusing on Business and Industry, Education, and the Civil War.

Aside from tours of the basement and exhibits, there will also be an old book sale, a scavenger hunt with prizes, and refreshments. We are excited to share our progress with the community!

Hope to see you all on May 3rd!

Wednesday Wanderings in the Archives: A postcard advertisement for harness racing at Griest Park. The manager noted, C.J. Griest, was Charles Griest, owner of the land and the park. Around 1907, Griest made a 1/3-mile track and horseracing became a popular pastime at the park. Races were held on Ascension Day, Memorial Day, July 4, the second Saturday in August and on Labor Day. Horse racing was suspended for a short time around WWI and then picked back up in the 1920’s. These races were popular and well attended with some having more than 15,000 spectators. Due to the Great Depression and competition from other parks, the crowds dwindled in the 1930’s with the last horse race held on July 4, 1936.
