Sister Cities Yorktown

Sister Cities Yorktown SCY is a member of Sister City International. We hope that you will become a member today!

Founded in 1990, our central mission is to enhance understanding and appreciation of the cultural and historical relationship between Yorktown, VA and our sister city, Port-Vendres, France. in 1990, we entered into a sister-city relationship with the French Mediterranean village of Port-Vendres, France and in 2010 celebrated our anniversary by renewing friendships, establishing cultural exchanges

and attending historic events in each community. In 2011, we want to build on the success of these programs and all the interest and community good-will that they created. Yorktown and Port-Vendres are natural twins, beginning with historic ties between the communities during the American Revolution. French forces proved decisive in the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 and armaments were shipped from this port to aid in our Revolution. In Port-Vendres, there is a Royal square with its obelisk and bronze "Independence of America" plaque, the only monument in France that honors America in this way. A similar monument in Yorktown honors the significant contribution of the French to American independence. And, we share other things in common: strategic port locations, maritime industries, beautiful waterfronts, outdoor markets, renowned artists and warm, friendly people.

The French Market was a huge success — and it didn’t happen by luck.

It happened because of an incredible group of people who showed up, stepped in, and made it all come together.

To our Board and team — your energy and commitment were unmatched.
To the teachers and students — you brought the spirit, the fun, and worked harder than anyone.
To our volunteers, Coast Guard, neighbors, and friends — you are the backbone of this event.

From setup to breakdown, from the first guest to the last bid… it was truly a special day.

Grateful. Proud. And already thinking about how we top it next year 😉

Thank you all ❤️ Debra Paulus
