With the temperatures rising and seasons changing we wanted to share a 1911 photo of our Zuni River when water would flow.
We hope your added thoughts, prayers and support help moisture return to our area.
We do not have the exact date but the Zuni River dried in the 1990’s.
If you were fortunate to see our river flowing. What are your favorite memories of the river?
Big shout out to our local radio station KSHI RADIO STATION 90.9 FM for inspiring this post with songs about rain. Elahkwa!

Meet Lyla!! One of our amazing cast members.

This winter, ZYEP and our partners at Ho’n A:wan Productions brought “Turkey Girl” to the stage as part of the 8th annual Delapna:we Project. Rooted in Zuni language, values and intergenerational learning, the program brings traditional stories to life through the performing arts.

For 14-year-old Lyla Martinez, these performances have become a winter tradition — and an important part of growing up in Zuni. The ninth grader joined the program during its very first year, when she was just 6 years old.

Sharing some information about today’s special significance.
We are grateful for elders allowing us to share their experiences and insights about the traditions that make us A:shiwi.
We highly encourage our younger generations to ask questions about these special occasions that happen here in the village.

It is always refreshing to see leaders learning more about us, from us.
We hope this visit will help continue the conversations between our respective governments.
We were happy to gift some of A:shiwi Map Art exhibition catalogs to Governor Hobbs and staff for a better understanding of Zuni landscapes.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work on an engine crew? Meet Lisa Latone, a wildland firefighter who serves as an engine captain for the BIA Forestry & Wildland Fire Management - Zuni Agency in Zuni, New Mexico.

Being the engine captain of a Type 6 fire engine, Lisa supervises two-three wildland firefighters ensuring they maintain a safe workplace. Each engine crew member at the Zuni Agency fire program is trained by Lisa on how to operate Type 6 engine pump units. She makes certain that firefighters obtain adequate water on the fireline through initial attack or mop-up operations. For Lisa, being an engine captain isn’t taken lightly, it means seeing to it that her crew is returns home safely to their loved ones – her assignment isn’t done until everyone returns safely.

Lisa is passionate about setting personal goals and being an engine captain helps her accomplish them. Keeping her motivated and seeking new challenges, this allows Lisa to go above and beyond in her career. Being a part of the engine crew, they strive to accomplish tasks assigned to them to uphold fiduciary responsibilities to the Pueblo of Zuni.

We asked Lisa what people might think is interesting about her job. She says, “Being outdoors enjoying nature through hiking, camping, and seeing the beautiful country throughout the nation [to the] adrenaline rush we get when it’s time to focus on fire suppression.”
