Looking at ‘domestic life’ as a theme, many artists have proven that there are various ways of representing the cozy, intimate space that we - either as a temporary or permanent resident - call ‘home’. While Richard Hamilton’s work made reference to the relationship between interior design and consumerism (“Just what it is that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?”, 1956), Vincent van Gogh has chosen to focus on his bedroom (Bedroom in Arles, 1888), and Pierre Bonnard was more interested in the sight of the bathtub in which his dear wife Marthe de Méligny often relaxed (La grande Baignoire, 1937-1939).

‘Apartment’ by Hoang Thien P**c shares a somewhat similar prospect. There could have been a lot of ways to paint an apartment, but P**c has selected a particular situation and moment: a space looking somewhat messy, like a multi-functional room as it has been furnished with a sofa for taking a nap, yet also ornaments suggesting the happening of a party. This piece captures a slice of a seemingly young person living in a vibrant metropolis. Here, P**c is not so much concerned with turning our gaze towards the interior design, rather, he wished to intensify the emotional meaning of things occupying our private space. For the artist, the arrangement of objects - be it unintentional or on purpose - speaks a lot about the owner of the home, and helps to create the soul of the space.

Sometimes, when one is moving silently through such an utterly desolate landscape, an overwhelming hallucination can make one feel that oneself, as an individual human being, is slowly being unraveled. The surrounding space is so vast that it becomes increasingly difficult to keep a balanced grip on one’s own being.

The mind swells out to fill the entire landscape, becoming so diffuse in the process that one loses the ability to keep it fastened to the physical self. The sun would rise from the eastern horizon, and cut its way across the empty sky, and sink below the western horizon. This was the only perceptible change in our surroundings. And in the movement of the sun, I felt something I hardly know how to name: some huge, cosmic love.

Cùng ghé thăm online “FEEL THE RAINBOW” hiện đang trưng bày ra tại No Concept

FEEL THE RAINBOW bao gồm các tác phẩm không giới hạn về trường phái, với màu sắc phong phú, rực rỡ, gợi liên tưởng đến hình ảnh lá cờ đa sắc của cộng đồng LGBTQ+)

FEEL THE RAINBOW không chỉ xoay quanh câu chuyện LGBTQ+, bởi ý tưởng chính của dự án là về sự chấp nhận tính ‘q***r’ (q***rness) trong mỗi con người. Thay vì tập trung vào bản dạng giới và xu hướng tính dục (sexual/gender identity), triển lãm mong muốn gợi mở cuộc đối thoại về căn tính nói chung (identity) để khuyến khích người xem nhìn nhận căn tính như một ‘phổ’ (spectrum) mà chúng ta có thể di chuyển tự do từ vị trí này sang vị trí khác, thay vì tự giới hạn mình bởi các nhãn cố định như L-G-B-T-Q etc.

Nội dung trưng bày được chia làm 4 chặng được xâu chuỗi chặt chẽ theo phong cách kể chuyện nhằm dẫn dắt khán giả tới những thông điệp chính của dự án:

- Sự đồng cảm
- Sự tự thừa nhận
- Sự chữa lành
- Sự tự hào

A virtual tour to “FEEL THE RAINBOW” currently on view at No Concept

FEEL THE RAINBOW includes works of various art styles, with rich and vibrant colours that remind one of the LGBTQ+ community’s multicolored flags.

Yet, FEEL THE RAINBOW doesn’t just revolve around the LGBTQ+ story, because the main idea of the project is about accepting the ‘q***rness’, or the state of ‘being at odds’ in each person. Instead of focusing on gender identity, the exhibition aims to spark dialogues about identity and from there, encourage viewers to see identity as a ‘spectrum’ that we can move freely from one place to another, rather than limiting ourselves to fixed labels such as L-G-B-T-Q etc.

The works are divided into four parts, woven together in a storytelling manner, aiming to guide the audience towards the core messages embedded within:

- Empathy
- Self-acknowledgement
- Healing
- Pride

In celebration of Pride Month, M Space and No Concept proudly introduce to the audience of Hanoi a group exhibition “Feel The Rainbow”.

"Feel the Rainbow" not only focuses on exploring and expressing diversity and acceptance within the LGBTQ+ community but also expands the perspective to embrace the acceptance of q***rness within each individual. M Space & No Concept aim to convey messages of empathy, self-acknowledgement, healing, and pride, creating a unique space that fosters thoughts and awareness.

NGHỆ SĨ TẠI M SPACE: NGUYỄN MINH TÚ

Nguyễn Minh Tú (s.1983) là một nghệ sĩ hiện đang sống và làm việc tại Hà Nội, Việt Nam. Trong những năm tháng trưởng thành, cô đã chứng kiến nhiều thay đổi của quê hương từ những năm đầu Đổi Mới cho tới thời kỳ hội nhập, phát triển như ngày hôm nay. Vì lẽ ấy, Minh Tú luôn dành nhiều quan tâm tới sự du nhập của luồng văn hoá nước ngoài tại Việt Nam, cũng như những ảnh hưởng xã hội mà chúng mang lại. Bối cảnh ấy, kết hợp với nguồn cảm hứng từ những người phụ nữ trong nền tảng và sự giáo dục truyền thống nhưng chịu tác động của xã hội hiện đại là chất liệu giúp cô thể hiện những suy tư, cảm xúc và trải nghiệm của mình thành màu và nét vẽ trên tấm toan.

Series “Lạc Trong Đô Thị” của cô hiện đang được trưng bày tại M Space Hà Nội cho tới ngày 31/3/2023.

M SPACE ARTIST: NGUYEN MINH TU

Nguyễn Minh Tú (b.1983) is a Hanoi-based artist. Having spent her whole adolescence observing Vietnam growing from the early years of Doi Moi till its prosperous era, Minh Tu finds herself continually intrigued by the flood of foreign cultural values into the country, as well as the social implications it brought about. That context, combined with the inspiration from women in a traditional background and upbringing but influenced by modern society, is the material that helps her express her thoughts, feelings, and experiences in colors and strokes on canvas.

The series “Lost In The City” is currently on view at M Space Hanoi until 31 March 2023.
