Faceting Focus

PINWHEEL - VIET GEMS 149
I am frequently asked what my favorite
gemstone designs are and where to find
them. After my trip to the Tucson Gem
and Mineral Show, I updated my list of
favorites to include gemstone designer, Phan
Thanh Trung.
At the Main Show's ULTRA TEC Booth,
I was reunited with one of my favorite
gemstone faceters and teachers, Tom Ross.
There he said he took a break from concave/
fantasy faceting and was captivated by the
new designs from Phan Thanh Trung. After
looking at his display of gemstones cut in the
designs by Phan, I completely understood.
CUTTING THE PINWHEEL
On reviewing Phan's four books, I was
perplexed about which design I would
facet first. The Pinwheel design grabbed my
attention. At first, I was hesitant because of
the low angles of the pavilion. These low
angles would cause gemstones to window or
create non-light returning areas/facets. The
more I studied the designs, I began to realize
that window and extinction (dark facets)
were part of Phan's plan to enhance the
finished gemstone. The Pinwheel design had
both characteristics along with an intrigu-
ing flower motif within a square shape. I
could not fully understand the final result
of faceting the gemstone, which was the
driving factor to facet the pinwheel design
as my first Phan gemstone design. I was
not disappointed and the finished Pinwheel
gemstone gave me a looking glass ability to
see the magic that Phan's other designs held
for the gemstone cutter.
Since returning from Tucson, fifty percent
of all the gemstones that I have faceted are
from Phan's four books. I have no plans on
slowing down cutting these fantastic designs
for the next few months!
