Performance Art Talk and Workshop with Nhi Le

Ngày 9 tháng 7 2022, nghệ sĩ trình diễn Nhi Lê (Sam) sẽ đến Đại học Fulbright Việt Nam và trò chuyện về thực hành, trải nghiệm với nghệ thuật trình diễn (performance art). Theo sau đó sẽ là buổi workshop dó Nhi Lê dẫn dắt và sẽ hướng dẫn một số hoạt động cũng như trao đổi sâu hơn về hình thức nghệ thuật này.

Sự kiện dành riêng cho sinh viên Fulbright.

***Thời gian: Thứ Bảy, ngày 9 tháng 7, 2022. Talk từ 10h sáng đến trưa, workshop từ 2h đến 5h chiều.

***Về nghệ sĩ:

Nhi Lê là nghệ sĩ trình diễn tại Việt Nam. Nghiên cứu và khám phá những phương pháp trải nghiệm nghệ thuật mới cho khán giả là chủ đề lâu dài mà Nhi quan tâm, Nhi luôn đặt câu hỏi cho sự kết nối giữa mình, không gian và thời gian. Cấu trúc xã hội đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc hình thành suy nghĩ và hành vi của mỗi cá nhân, nhưng điều này thay đổi ở các nền văn hoá và các thời kì khác nhau. Nếu có thể bước ra khỏi dòng chảy thời đại và không gian đang sống, Nhi tin rằng còn một cái tôi nguyên bản, sâu thẳm khác trong tiềm thức - một bản dạng không bị bó hẹp hay định hình bởi bất kì yếu tố nào đang chờ được đánh thức.

Nhi từng tham gia chương trình Nghệ Sĩ Lưu Trú Đông Nam Á (Malaysia), các dự án cộng đồng của Bộ Y Tế, Viện nghiên cứu Xã Hội, Kinh tế và Môi trường ISEE, Bay Library, trình diễn trong các tác phẩm nhóm/solo của Sàn Art, MoTplus, Time Between v.v… Bên cạnh đó, Nhi phát triển các dự án riêng như On-(blue)-line project: 'Blue Line Performers’ được hỗ trợ bởi Viện Goethe, ấn phẩm ‘Alien in houses out on streets’, có triển lãm cá nhân hỗ trợ bởi Toong/Gốclab Creation. Cô cũng là điều phối viên của workshop “Fill The Gap" về nghệ thuật trình diễn.

On July 9, 2022, performance artist Nhi Le (Sam) will have a talk at Fulbright University Vietnam on her approaches to and experience with performance art. She will also host a workshop to introduce participants to some performing practices, in addition to bringing up deeper conversations about the art form.

The event is exclusive to Fulbright students.

***Time: Saturday, July 9, 2022. 10 AM - noon (talk), 2 PM - 5 PM (workshop).

***About the artist:

Nhi Le is a performance artist based in Vietnam. She has long been interested in researching and discovering new ways to experience art as well as the relationship between oneself and space-time. Social constructs play an important role in the formation of individual thoughts and behaviors, but they vary among different cultural and historical contexts. The ability to free oneself from their spatial and temporal circumstances, she believes, is the key to uncovering a pristine self hidden under layers of subconsciousness⁠—an unbounded, amorphous identity that is waiting to be awakened.

Nhi participated in the Southeast Asian Arts Residency (Malaysia), public projects by the Ministry of Health, The Institute for Social, Economic and Environmental Research (iSEE), Bay Library, group and solo performances at Sàn Art, MoTplus, Time Between, etc. Nhi is developing her own projects such as On-(blue)-line project: “Blue Line Performers” supported by the Goethe-Institut, the publication “Alien in houses out on streets”, solo exhibits supported by Toong/Gốclab Creation. She is also the coordinator of the “Fill The Gap" workshop on performance art.

Fulbright University’s students have independently explored modes of making that speak to their personal interests, contemporary anxieties, and innovative ways of thinking. From AI imaginings to fluorescent photographs and dreamlike canvases, the works displayed in this exhibition are as interdisciplinary and cutting edge as the young artists who created them.

The artists exhibited in this showcase are involved with two undergraduate student-run organizations - Blue Period & Fulbright Art Lab. All proceeds from the sale of work in this exhibition will directly assist student visual art organizations at Fulbright. We greatly appreciate your time and support.

Tam Nguyen from Fulbright Art Lab and Phuong-Anh Nguyen from Fulbright Historical Society will discuss the editorial process behind the online zine “From Our Place to the Frontline” and their plans for the future of this project. The talk will also be participated by members of the Burmese movement Visual Rebellion (https://visualrebellion.org) as part of a joint effort in creating conversations about current crises in Myanmar.

📣 Introduction to project: BÊN KIA CHIẾN TUYẾN - ငါတို့နေရာမှ ရှေ့တန်းသို့ - FROM OUR PLACE TO THE FRONTLINE

🤔 What and Why

Being intrigued by recent youth resistant campaigns in Burma since February 2021, we - a group of undergraduates and artists, with support from Myanmar youths who decided to initiate a multimedia project that centers around a hybrid artistic - non-scholarly zine publication called “Bên Kia Chiến Tuyến - ငါတို့နေရာမှ ရှေ့တန်းသို့ - From our place to the frontline”. This project is meant to direct attention to the current political turmoil across Burma, with the Southeast Asian youths, as the target audience.

💡 How

“Bên Kia Chiến Tuyến - ငါတို့နေရာမှ ရှေ့တန်းသို့ - From our place to the frontline” is a non-profit, independent, overarching project that highlights the extreme violence in Myanmar, which has not been fully covered by international media. That said, this project collects stories and perspectives from the people of Myanmar who are living amidst the escalating violence, as well as international and regional stances and responses. All of these will be communicated through a multimedia project consisting of a series of events and activities centered around a bilingual zine publication.

👋 Fulbright Historical Society (FHS): an undergraduate community aiming to promote the history discipline and its scholarship. FHS provides history enthusiasts with sufficient support to nurture their interests and abilities to thrive in both an academic and professional setting.

👋 Fulbright Art Lab: a student-run art organization based in Fulbright University Vietnam. Founded in 2018, Art Lab has coordinated numerous events and programs such as film screenings, panel discussions, exhibitions, aiming to create a connection between art labors and communities in Vietnam.

👋 Interim University Council- University of Yangon: After the February coup, 338 tutors/professors and 90 officers from the University of Yangon (UY) joined the CDM movement and the junta declared them as fired. On the other hand, a number of those who are supporting the military were transferred to UY. Current university administrators including rectors are working under the military. To form a revolutionary council against them, the Interim University Council- University of Yangon (IUC-UY) was formed by the Teachers' Union and Students' Union. IUC-UY is recognized as the legal administrator of UY by National Unity Government (NUG) and we are working accordingly with the NUG Ministry of Education and also independently. IUC-UY has many working processes and has different branches. One of them is the International Cooperation Team (ICT) in which we try to connect with overseas universities to support our democratic movements, to fundraise for us, not to accept non-CDM military supporters.

Được thôi thúc bởi các chiến dịch thanh niên gần đây ở Miến Điện từ tháng 2 năm 2021,,một nhóm sinh viên và nghệ sĩ, với sự hỗ trợ từ những thanh niên Myanmar, quyết định thực hiện một dự án đa phương tiện xoay quanh một ấn phẩm nghệ thuật - phi học thuật có tên “Bên Kia Chiến Tuyến - ငါတို့နေရာမှ ရှေ့တန်းသို့ - From our place to the frontline”. Dự án này nhằm điều hướng sự chú ý đến khủng hoảng nhân đạo hiện nay trên khắp Miến Điện, với đối tượng mục tiêu là thanh niên Đông Nam Á.

💡 Làm như thế nào?

In March 13, 2020, multimedia artist Kate Lain created the collaborative playlist "CABIN FEVER: Coping with COVID-19 playlist of online experimental films & videos" (https://bit.ly/kate_lain_cabin_fever) initially for the benefit of her video art students who had to study from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the experimental film community has contributed hundreds of films under 21 categories, all of which can be accessed free of charge.

Since July 2021, after two months of unprecedented surges in COVID-19 cases, around one third of Vietnam's population had been put under strict lockdown until recently. This academic year, at the cusp of a new academic year that starts with 4 months of online classes, many Fulbright students are still struggling to cope with the consequences of this pandemic to their mental and physical well-being.

Similar in intention to Kate Lain's "CABIN FEVER" playlist, "cabin fever revisited: an experimental film screening event" is an effort to alleviate that struggle, especially in dealing with cabin fever, by inviting Fulbright students into a world of films whose maverick is the searchlight that seeks the extreme of human emotions, wisdom, and creativity. The Art Lab also hopes this screening is a gentle introduction to art experimentation in the form of films by selecting some of the most accessible films in Kate Lain's playlist (plus a couple others outside of it).

Filmed in black-and-white as a visual diary, the documentary follows the stream of consciousness of French-Vietnamese composer Tôn Thất An about his rebirth in Asia after his younger years spent in France where he was born, his connection with the elements and the deities, and his relationship with music, musicians and all the 'fortunate accidents' in life.

Screening: "Our Love Utopia - Cõi Yêu Mộng Ảo Của Chúng Ta" by Lien Pham and Duc Dam.

With two short films "Untitled (Utopian Dating App)" and "A Short Film about Loving", Lien Pham and Duc Dam probe the minds of youth to seek a common morphology of love. Where is love along the axes of intimacy, proximity, and conquest? How is it transformed by the forces of longing, isolation, and defeat? Lien and Duc’s quest settles at a utopian fantasy: from the human condition imperiled by a pandemic and a sprawling digital landscape, love can still emerge in immaculate beauty and dignity. But beneath the gloss of utopia are glimpses of truth revealed by the acid of despair.

Based in two dynamic contemporary landscapes - HCMC and Hanoi, the two young artists are considered as part of a new generation of Vietnamese independent filmmakers. Both films were no-budget attempts to explore a universal theme within the constraints of an institution, marking their initial steps as students into the public film scene. The Art Lab hopes this screening could also serve as a networking event for those interested in filmmaking, from hobbyists to prospective art students at Fulbright.

About the artists:

Lien Pham (b. 1997) is a visual artist in her last year of studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Lien’s work is largely concerned with describing and critiquing intimacy as it lives in physical social spaces/constructs and naturally within personal relationships. Lien utilizes different strategies and a range of image-based mediums to investigate this theme in the different aspects of her life, surroundings, and communities.

Duc Dam (b. 2001) is an aspiring filmmaker based in Hanoi, Vietnam. As of now he sees cinema as poetry in motion, stories in his life fleeting verses urging to be written down.His projects are often spontaneous, in which he enjoys crossing the line between a documentary and a fiction. He adores people in his own circles as characters - this perhaps being best shown in "A Short Film About Loving", his first step away from small high-school projects into the public art scene.

[GERMINATE Project] Vlog Episode 1: Growing Bacterial Colonies, a Tutorial

Follow the (mis)adventures of scientifically and artistically innocent Vietnamese students in their quest of new ways to turn microbes into art!

In Episode 1, our protagonists learn how to grow bacterial colonies without much budget and access to scientific equipment. They plow through scarce resources, transgress protocols, speak broken English, say silly things, and end up successful in growing their first batch of colonies while remaining physically intact.

Every week, we will experiment with a different vlog style. Stay tuned for more surprises and shenanigans next week!

Các bạn ơi, cuối cùng thì vlog về chúng mình--những cô cậu bé ngây ngô về khoa học lẫn nghệ thuật--cũng đã lên sóng!

Trong tập 1, chúng mình học cách nuôi vi khuẩn khi trong tay không có tiền hay dụng cụ khoa học tân tiến chuẩn 5 sao. Chúng mình cùng nhào lộn với đủ thứ khó khăn, tung hứng với các quy trình thí nghiệm, nói tiếng Anh sai ngữ pháp, nhưng chửi bậy thì rất đúng cú pháp, và cuối cùng cũng nuôi được mẻ vi khuẩn đầu tiên trong thân xác vẹn toàn.
